Our friends at Local Authority are opening their doors for Indie News Week 2026 and you're invited.

Drop into The Creation Space to meet the team behind Medway's independent local news outlet, find out how they decide what to cover, share the stories and issues that matter to you, and tell them what they might be missing.

They're particularly keen to hear from people in Medway's villages and rural communities, where local issues can often go under the radar.

There'll also be a panel discussion at 11am exploring the future of independent local news, the challenges facing the sector, and what happens when communities lose access to dedicated local journalism. Speaker announcements coming soon.

Whether you stay for five minutes or a few hours, it's a great opportunity to have your say and learn more about the role independent journalism plays in our community.

⏰ 10am - 5pm drop in throughout the day

Indie News Week is organised by the Public Interest News Foundation. This year's theme is "No news is bad news", highlighting the importance of independent journalism in keeping communities informed and holding power to account.

Zine Club is back this Saturday and this seasons theme is SHOUT OUT - zines all about things you think other people should know about 🗣️

We run a morning session perfect for beginners at just £4 per person and an afternoon more in depth session at £5 per person.

And what exactly is a zine? It's a small handmade pamphlet or booklet (a small magaZINE) themed around a topic or idea, often with lots of collage and hand drawn pictures or writing - super simple but really fun to make!

Free heritage skills session - 'Access and inclusion in Heritage'

Date: Tuesday 16 June 2026
Time: 9.30am to 1.30pm

The half-day training session will support heritage organisations to develop a practical understanding of how accessibility can be achieved in the heritage environment and how small, achievable actions can significantly improve the overall experience for all visitors, staff and volunteers.

Attendees will leave with confidence in the knowledge and skills that will significantly improve the overall experience for all visitors, staff and volunteers.
You can find out more and book a place here; Access and Inclusion in Heritage workshop: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/access-and-inclusion-in-heritage-tickets-1990435868263?aff=oddtdtcreator

Access in Heritage Cohort Opportunity
This session will also provide further details on our upcoming Access in Heritage programme, a new initiative supporting heritage organisations across Medway to become more inclusive and accessible.

We’re seeking a diverse cohort of six organisations—including heritage sites, museums, community projects, and tours—who want to improve access for visitors, staff and volunteers, particularly those who are D/deaf, disabled, neurodivergent, or living with long-term health conditions.

What’s included
Participants will receive a package of tailored support, including:
- An access and inclusion training workshop (Successful applicants who have been unable to make the in-person session on Tuesday 16 June will be offered an opportunity to attend an online workshop. Attendance at one session is required.)
- A best practice case study day trip
- A tailored accessibility audit
- Support to develop an access guide
- A £500 grant for a ‘quick win’ improvement
- No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to learn and make meaningful changes.

Visit the Medway Heritage Place webpage for more information; https://www.medway.gov.uk/info/200182/culture_and_heritage/1884/medway_heritage_place_project/5

Completed expressions of Interest forms must be submitted by 12pm, Sunday 21 June 2026.

There are a few spots left for Messy Paint next Friday 12th June. Designed especially for under 5’s, these playful painting sessions are all about exploring colour, texture, and creativity in a fun and relaxed space. No need to worry about mess - that’s what it’s all about!

Together you’ll explore colour, texture, and mark‑making with safe, washable materials, so little ones can experiment freely while you skip the clean‑up.

Free-flow messy painting activities in the Creation Space
* A chance for little ones to explore art through splodging, squishing, and splattering
* A relaxed, creative environment perfect for curious toddlers
* Led by a local artist who will encourage and play with colour and creativity.
* Tickets are £5 per child

https://www.zeffy.com/en-GB/ticketing/messy-paint-creative-play-for-under-5s

The sessions are held in our ground floor fully accessible Creation Space and the café is open on the second floor for a restorative coffee and cake after.

Important info for grown-ups:

* Please dress your child (and yourself!) in clothes you don’t mind getting messy — paint WILL get everywhere
* We recommend bringing a spare change of clothes for your child (and you!)
* Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times
* Booking a ticket per child is essential

The British weather wasn't our friend that day, some of the team are still traumatised by windblown gazebos and table cloths 🤪 🌪

BUT the show must go on, and thousands of your came out to see the ships, hear the guns being fired, and take part in a fantastic amount of honking for The Grand Cacophony 📣

One of the more bizarre events we've managed!
