Waulking The Year | Spring Gathering

Fibre friends! Please join us for the final gathering in our Waulking the Year series.

Across the seasons we’ve cleaned, spun, dyed, and woven. Now, in spring, we come together to waulk the cloth, the final transformation.

Waulking is a rhythmic, hands-on process, a form of felting guided by traditional songs, where the beat of our hands and voices bind the fibres into strength and wholeness.

Winter Waulking The Year
Saturday 31st January

Winter brings inside cosiness and age old rituals of collective cloth making, spinning, fulling (felting) and song. Join us for our 3rd seasonal offering with a day long immersive workshop. Rooted in the rhythms of cloth-making, community, and land connection.

Dried seed heads of ‘fullers’ teasels line the edges of winter fields. The looms are filling with each pass of the hand wound shuttles. Together we’ll gather to continue cloth making, fibre processing, singing, and delight around the table in a hearty foraged lunch.

🌾 Waulking the Year
The Summer Workshop

We’re excited to launch our new four-part seasonal series with this beautiful, intimate summer gathering. Rooted in the rhythms of cloth-making, community, and land connection.

As summer begins, so too does the process of transforming plant and protein fibres into cloth. Together we’ll explore the full cycle of making:

Fleece with Flo Perrett –
Sheep shearing, skirting, soaking & carding

Nettle & ethnobiology with Newton See –
Preparing nettle plant fibres through traditional methods

Kentish & Celtic Fibre Songs with Amy Davies –
Learning traditional folk songs through each stage of the process.

We’ll be working around the fire, with our hands deep in the fibres of the land, held in garden grounds of Oast Studios.

A four-part series of Kentish & Celtic heritage fibre & song workshops, woven throughout the seasons.

Spend the day at Oast Studios Kent CIC, 10am-4pm, learning traditional fibre skills; from fleece shearing and plant fibre harvesting to natural dyeing, weaving, and waulking.

With her years of carving knowledge and deep commitment to woodland craft traditions, Jill brings the spirit of the carving community to life.

This Sunday at the Summer Fair, adults can join one of two special two-hour spoon-carving sessions with Jill:

Under Jill’s expert guidance, you’ll carve your own wooden spoon to take home and gain hands-on experience in the art of green woodworking.

Join us at Oast Studios Kent CIC for a hands-on journey into the world of batik - a beautiful and meditative art form rooted in ancient textile traditions from around the world.

Led by experienced artist and educator Beryl Chalk, this 6-week course invites you to explore wax-resist dyeing techniques while nurturing your creative expression in a supportive, process-led environment.

This course is perfect for beginners as well as those wishing to deepen their practice. Each week builds on the last, guiding you from simple explorations to finished pieces.

What to Expect

• Introduction to traditional batik techniques using wax and natural fibre cloth.

• Hands-on use of tjanting tools and brushes to apply wax.

• Guidance on safe use of dyes and how to build layered colour.

• Techniques for developing pattern, texture and personal motifs.

• A focus on process over perfection, encouraging exploration and confidence.

• Time and space to complete a finished piece.

• All tools and materials provided, plus tea and conversation.
