Friday was a brilliant day for the Veterans’ Comedy Club (VCC).

We were at the Theatre Royal Plymouth, supporting Suzy Bennett as she led the latest Armed Forces Comedy Workshop. After a day of getting stuck in, our VCC members took to the stage for the evening show, performing alongside Suzy and the workshop participants.

It’s powerful proof that a sense of humour can be a real tool for recovery, confidence, and community.

Huge respect to everyone who stepped up to the mic. You smashed it.

And a big thank you to the “Our Space” team at TRP for having us.

We’re proud to sure that two of our comedians will be performing in the showcase:

Marie Cross, one of this year’s winners, bringing her brilliant, funny, and heartfelt spoken word to the stage.

Gillian the Civilian, our fellow veteran and VCC regular, will be hosting the night as compère.

The STARTS Awards are now OPEN for submissions!

We’re proud to support this brilliant platform that celebrates creativity in the veteran and forces-connected community.

Some of our own have already made their mark — Graeme Gibbon-Brooks, the late Jamie Weller, and Gillian “the Civilian” Charlton have all been previous winners. And our very own Sarah Howarth, a core member of the Veterans Comedy Club, has also contributed as a The Starts Award judge in the past.

Whether your talent lies in spoken word, visual art, or something totally original — we want to see more of our community stepping into the spotlight.

A huge well done to our fantastic Veterans Comedy Club comedian Marie Cross for another successful gig last night.

Since discovering her passion for stand-up comedy,while attending the Recovery Through Comedy course and subsequently becoming a founding member and Director of the Veterans Comedy Club, Marie has been on an incredible journey. Last night, she hit another milestone — taking the mic as the compère for the comedy night at the Castle Inn in Cawood!

This isn’t Marie’s first time at this venue — last time, she performed as one of the comedians. But stepping up to host the whole night shows just how far she’s come.

Marie is living proof of what can happen when you find your tribe, pick up the mic, and step into the spotlight. She’s gone beyond VCC gigs, taking every opportunity to grow as a comic and build her confidence, and we couldn’t be prouder.

At the Veterans Comedy Club, we’re all about creating space for veterans to explore comedy as a way of recovery, connection, and belonging. Marie’s journey shows that it’s not just about laughs — it’s about life beyond service, and the community that has your back every step of the way 🫡

We at the Veterans Comedy Club are thrilled to announce that applications for the upcoming STARTS Award will open in one month’s time 🤩

Our connection with the STARTS Award runs deep, as three of our talented members—Gill Charlton, Graeme Gibbon-Brooks and the late Jamie Weller—have previously been honoured as winners in the Spoken Word category.

Beyond their accolades, Gill Charlton showcased her exceptional skills by compering last year’s winners’ showcase at the iconic Matt and Phred’s Jazz Club in Manchester and is set to reprise this role in the upcoming event 🙌

Additionally, our fabulous comedian and club member, Sarah Howarth, has contributed her expertise by serving on the judging panel for the Visual Arts category in previous years.

At the Veterans Comedy Club, we’re not just about the laughs—we’re about the support too. Our members don’t just perform with us; we’ve got each other’s backs when we step out solo as well. Andy is living proof that the skills and confidence built in our club go far beyond our gigs. Absolute legend! 👏👏
