I finally got back into Joe Daisy studio to finish my second ever portrait in oils 😀

Quite happy with how she has turned out, and I learned a lot which I can take into my next painting.

There’s always room for improvement and sometimes I feel frustrated that I don’t yet have the skill level to execute fully what I have in mind. But that will come. I just need to establish a more regular painting practice....

...and here’s another (which I didn’t get time to finish). Hoping to squeeze in some studio time before Xmas.

My friend wrote a gorgeous story called The Beautiful Bird. She asked if I could do some paintings to illustrate it.

Immediately I came up with all the reasons why I can’t - busy at work, not practiced enough at painting to do her story justice, stressed with separating from husband, busy trying to dejunk our house ready for selling etc etc

Recently, I was going through some old canvases and found an unfinished hummingbird I’d started for my daughter a year ago. I’d abandoned it because it wasn’t progressing well.

Hang on a minute, that could be the foundation for a Beautiful Bird....

So a few hours later she’s appearing. Not yet finished, but I’m enjoying the freedom, vibrancy and joy of her so far.

Now I know why the painting wasn’t progressing.

It needed to wait for the right time.

If you’re not feeling something. If it isn’t working out yet. It’s ok to stop trying and focus on something else. You never know, the right time could make itself clear when you least expect it.
