π¬π§ 4 SCOTS Head to Paphos to Honour a Veteranβs Legacy π¨πΎ
Last week, we travelled to Paphos, Cyprus, to play in honour of Harold aged 102!!! A remarkable veteran whose story embodies courage, sacrifice, and resilience. It has been an honour to meet him and hear his incredible stories firsthand.
Harold served with the Scottish Rifles (Cameronians), first as a gunner and later as a Platoon Commander. On D-Day, 6 June 1944, he was among the 60,000 British troops who stormed the beaches of Normandy at Arromanches-les-Bains. He never forgot the bitter cold of the landing craft, the chaos of the beach, or the comrades lost as his unit pushed inland.
During the fighting in France, Harold was hit by a mortar shell, ending his time on the frontline. He was flown back to Britain for surgery and recovery.
By VE Day, he was in Edinburgh, driving troops when Churchillβs announcement came over the radio. The entire city erupted into celebration on Princes Street β a moment Harold described as joyful yet bittersweet, as he had recently lost his younger brother, who served with the RAF.
After the war, Harold made his home in Cyprus, where SSAFA has supported him for over a decade, helping him live independently with dignity.
