Introducing Frances Watts
Somerset-based painter F R A N C E S W A T T S returns again and again to the landscapes closest to her, often the very places where her children “play and run, poke and rummage amongst the seeds and the leaves, the sludge and the soil.”
Working frequently en plein air and in oils, Watts uses colour as an emotional language. Her paintings respond to the echoes of the past, the textures, the sounds and the smells of beloved locations, capturing landscapes that are always changing and yet always familiar.
Among these are Haddon Wood and the countryside around Hadspen, between Bruton and Castle Cary. Together, the works form an ongoing exploration of “the passage of time, the sanctity of place and the ritual progress of the changing seasons.”
We are proud to be exhibiting several of Frances Watts’ works at ‘Curated at Chaffeymoor’, alongside more than 150 works by Modern British and Contemporary artists shown across the interiors of this private country residence on the Somerset/Dorset border.
