——————————————————
Like many of the paintings that Peter has created in his studio on the Gold Coast of Australia, there is an inherent understanding of coast and sea that reveals the artist’s life in Cornwall. “The paintings evolve over time in the studio, by being worked and reworked, then stripped back and repeated”, he explains. The artist’s work is a physical reaction to his own memories and experience.

Glass Bottom Boat
oil with mixed media on canvas
185 x 195cm

“Glass Bottom Boat takes a lake in South Australia in the dead of night and lets it turn strange. A great dark mass spreads across the centre of the canvas, part cloud, part void, part the black water itself, with a single warm glow caught somewhere inside it. Around it the surface is dragged into long vertical runs and scattered with small points of white that read at once as stars overhead and as their reflections below. The two keep trading places. The title holds that doubling, the sense of floating on a surface while staring down into the dark beneath it. Among the darker works in the show, it keeps beauty and unease in the same black water.” Peter Ceredig-Evans

PETER CEREDIG-EVANS (b. 1989)
Bicheno, Tasmanian Gold
oil with mixed media on canvas
93 x 87cm

Bicheno looks to the east coast of Tasmania, where granite headlands run down into a cold, restless sea. Ceredig-Evans gives almost two thirds of the canvas over to weather, a soft wall of blue-grey suspended somewhere between sky and sea mist. Below it the surface breaks into scraped and encrusted whites, bone and ochre, the foreshore reduced to texture and pressure rather than to detail. A thin dark line and a few flecks of rust and oxblood are the only insistences in an otherwise dissolving scene, small warm notes that recall the lichen-streaked granite the town is known for. It is a painting held right at the edge of legibility, a coastline you sense more than see.

This solo exhibition runs until 27 June at David Simon Contemporary, Castle Cary.
