Precious Planet: Held by the Earth

“Wonder waits in stillness.”

This small hand-stitched vessel was made after a quiet, unforgettable day among the stones at Grange Circle, near Loch Gur.

We were invited into a spontaneous meditation by fellow pilgrims, and gifted a stone to carry the moment. That stone now rests inside this piece — held, like memory, in thread and fabric.

I made this in the spirit of Precious Planet, a gentle exploration of what the Earth holds — and how we hold her in return.

Deep thanks to artist .singleton whose work and generous mentoring led me back to stitching, and to making as quiet witness. I’m a little bit addicted now.

Swipe to see the layers. Every one stitched in stillness.

The Earth holds us…
Coinníonn an Domhan sinn.

This piece began with the cracks—lines of wear, care, erosion. Inspired by the Gaia installation in Dublin and stitched from eco-dyed cloth and thread, it marks the start of a journey: a month of slow making, listening to the land.

This week, I’m exploring how the Earth speaks through its fractures—how we are held, even as we come undone.

My first foray into Freeform crochet and I’m hooked. Inspired by the timelines, rocks and rhythms of my local coastline using this piece is made entirely from scrap yarn. It’s wild, wearable and a little windswept , just like the sea that shaped it ♻️

Touring down south I was beginning to think we’d never wear our “young at heart” sweaters it’s been glorious but we brightened the scenery on a grey day in Folkestone …. And raised a few smiles. ♻️

Well the star was supposedly my wonderful Freeform crochet cowl inspired by . So simple , even for a crochet novice like me and fast on huge hook but …… It’s first outing yesterday was at Mocha Chocolate in Richmond where Alan enjoyed a chocolate making workshop and I enjoyed the results and best mocha coffee ever . It had to be star 😂.

My first crocheted wearable. Using 4 strands of scrap yarn made this a challenge but inspired by whose gently paced video with soothing voice was an absolute plus. Love love the potential of a more Freeform crochet with a big hook . As always recycle and certainly bring brighter light to wet cold damp January blues .

Possibly the last post this year and it’s my patient, kind, caring husbands exquisite detailed work. Hours spent waiting for me to finish a workshop , a sketch in a church, en plein air painting he has steadily stitched and this Celtic tree will always hold beautiful memories. It’s travelled over 5k miles last year on road trips and despite being beside his less than careful artsy wife stayed clean ……..love and thanks to all my supporters here and looking forward to many more colourful creations

I am definitely a fiberista. I love the feel , smell, and colours of natural yarns and my dedication to reducing textile waste has been a lifelong commitment . I never viewed it as social commentary until recently reading an inspiring blanket g post from whose newsletter always informative, inspiring and heartwarming she made me revisit my thoughts on my still unfinished patchwork jumper. Whilst it could be a feminine narrative yet my choice of colours, patterns , textures is definitely invoked by my mood. A complicated pattern when I need to concentrate and still my mind ; the use of pastel and/ or bright colours. I have bags of tiny scraps so why is one half of the front pastel the other brights . Why more organised squares than block patterns . No right answers just a desire to elevate a humble craft into a unique textile art piece that I have poured much love and commitment to and brings me joy 🤩

Birthdays are Time of reflection at 71 anyway and whilst I don’t share much personal stuff Alan’s collage highlighted some of the amazing wearables art crafted this year. Supported by amazing teachers, (especially ) places and a wonderful husband who often sits and waits until I’ve finished or picks up messages I leave behind. It’s been a wonderful year and looking forward to another creative year ❤️
