Review Is There Anybody Out There? Triongl – Theatr Twm o’r Nant, Denbigh -21 March 2026 by Simon Kensdale

“The action is always presented at a very steady tempo and the jokes occur, rather than sounding forced. Nothing is emphasised. The acting is so naturalistic it’s invisible: it’s easy to think the cast are appearing as their real selves. The three performers sell themselves to the audience as sympathetic individuals participating in a true story. This approach provides the piece with its originality. It does have the feel of something that has been intensively workshopped, but the theme provides food for thought and the ideas that have been added in are sound. The budgie, of course, is very funny.”

It's previews weekend! Mae hi'n penwythnos y rhagddangosiadau!

We open ‘Is There Anybody There?’ tonight at Canolfan a Theatr Soar in Merthyr.
Rydym yn agor ‘Is There Anybody There?’ heno yn Theatr Soar ym Merthyr.

Theatr Soar have supported the show since the beginning and we’ve been excited to be here in Merthyr all week preparing the show to go on tour.

Mae Theatr Soar wedi cefnogi’r sioe ers y dechrau ac mae hi wedi bod yn bleser i fod yma ym Merthyr drwy’r wythnos yn paratoi’r sioe i fynd ar daith.

Inspired by evenings spent at psychic mediumship shows and personal stories of grief, ‘Is There Anybody There?’ questions how we interact with death, what lies on the other side and how do we, the living, come to terms with the great unknown?

‘Is There Anybody There?’ is presented bilingually with scenes performed in both Welsh and English. It’s great for Welsh learners as surtitles are provided.

Take a behind the scenes peek at rehearsals for ‘Is There Anybody There?’.

We could explain why Val is laying across some chairs but that would spoil it, you need to come and see the show!

We are delighted to welcome Clêr Stephens, who joins Triongl co-founders Valmai Jones and Rebecca Knowles in the cast. Directed by Triongl co-founder Rebecca Smith-Williams.

Taking a pause from Triongl work - It was a real pleasure to be able to work on Elves Have Left the Building by Simon Howells, an experimental, site-specific R&D project made in partnership with Shift Cardiff and WaWa Ltd and funded by the Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru | Arts Council of Wales

Drawing on Christmas folklore and department store Santa visits, the piece questioned our relationship with capitalism, community, and the environment.

A huge thank you to everyone who worked on the project and those who came to experience it. Simon and his fantastic collaborators; Jon Ruddick, Gethin Roberts Richard Berry Glenys Evans and director Carri Munn, were a real pleasure to work with.

I’m looking forward to the future life of the work, supported by the guidance of Nia Wyn Skyrme and to continuing conversations with organisations including Re-Create / Ail-Greu and Repair Cafe Wales
