Our frame of the week.

We’re incredibly proud of all our frames, but this has been one of our favourites of recent times. The classical gold frame paired with the damson and charcoal black double mount creates a striking contrast with the elaborate, vivid print, giving the whole piece a bold yet beautifully balanced finish.

The Changeling by Grayson Perry brings together contemporary anxieties, digital culture and everyday life in a richly layered composition filled with humour and social observation, which we absolutely adore.

A glimpse into timeless beauty.

Our Classic Collection brings together historic paintings rich in craftsmanship, atmosphere and tradition. From portraiture and religious subjects to landscapes and finely observed figurative works, each piece reflects the skill, symbolism and visual language of its time.

We had the pleasure of framing a Quentin Blake illustration recently.

The story behind this one goes back to our opening weekend in Caerphilly. Coincidentally, our opening day fell on the same day that Antiques Roadshow was filming at Caerphilly Castle.

The lovely owners took this piece along without realising quite what they had, only to be given a valuation of £20,000. Needless to say, something so special deserved the star treatment.

We love the finished piece. The blue frame and antique white and russian green double mount pick up the soft watercolour blues in the sky, while drawing attention towards the children at the centre of the illustration. The bevelled frame gently leads the eye inward, with the generous white border giving the artwork plenty of space to breathe.

Quentin Blake is perhaps best known for bringing Roald Dahl’s stories to life through his illustrations, giving this piece a lovely local connection too, with Dahl born just down the road in Llandaff, Cardiff.

Where observation gives way to colour, pattern and imagination.

Cordelia Hutichison’s paintings bring classical sensibilities together with a contemporary approach to still life and the natural world. Expressive colour, vintage textiles, ceramics and decorative pattern create richly layered compositions where carefully observed detail meets a more spontaneous, semi abstraction.

Some paintings are too difficult to walk away from.

Figure Study 1 by Max Baccanello has been sold after its new owner returned to view the painting five times before finally deciding to make it his own. Some works have a way of drawing you back.

About the work
Figure Study 1 by Max Baccanello
Oil on panel

A reclining figure emerges through layers of warm ochre, soft blue and muted cream, rendered with loose, expressive brushwork and a strong sense of texture. The simplicity of the composition draws attention to the body, balancing intimacy and stillness with Baccanello’s distinctive, painterly approach.

A closer look at avian beauty.

Symphony of Wings by Maximillion Baccanello brings together a striking collection of birds, each captured with its own presence and personality. Rich tones, expressive detail and carefully composed forms turn each work into an intimate study of nature.

We have a new addition to our collection.

To replace Espagnoles, A Spanish Water Carrier by William M. Hay is now available to view at our Caerphilly gallery. Painted in 1866, the work captures a richly observed figure from 19th-century Spanish life, combining vivid colour with a strong sense of character and place.

About the work
A Spanish Water Carrier by William M. Hay
Oil on canvas, 1866

A young woman stands outdoors carrying a large ceramic water jug, dressed in a golden shawl, dark bodice and vivid red skirt, with a pink rose tucked into her hair. The warm palette, careful attention to costume and refined handling of the figure reflect the Victorian fascination with Spanish regional subjects, giving the painting both narrative charm and academic polish.

A particularly special moment from the opening of our Caerphilly gallery.

On the first day of our Opening Exhibition, Espagnoles by Francisco Rodríguez
Sánchez Clement found its new home. It was a pleasure to see the new owner
connect with the painting and to share in the moment together.

About the work

Espagnoles by Francisco Rodríguez Sánchez Clement
Oil on canvas, c.1950

A woman rests outdoors in a vivid dress, her stillness set against a darker, more
dramatic landscape. Rich colour, loose brushwork and strong tonal contrasts
reflect the artist’s romanticised approach to Spanish folk life, balancing intimacy
with a sense of theatre. The work exemplifies his mature style, shaped by
Spanish Post-Impressionist realism.
