Now part museum and part working pottery, Nantgarw is once again manufacturing the original softpaste porcelain. Over five hundred workshops take place at Nantgarw China Works each year

including ceramics, pottery, fused glass and willow weaving. Group visits are our speciality.

“I’ve been volunteering at Nantgarw for just over a year and as a former tourist guide I love sharing the history of the china works with visitors, but I’m happy to roll up my sleeves and get involved with everything from gardening to making tea.

It’s nice to work as a team and feel part of a community. We have volunteer outings to other places of local interest and we all appreciate what everyone brings to Nantgarw. I would recommend volunteering to anyone, just come with an open mind and enjoy it.”

“When I moved back to the area from London I began volunteering with Glamorgan Archives and now I am involved with creating a database of all the items at Nantgarw.

I have made lots of friends and enjoy the social events. To anyone thinking about volunteering I would say, come and try it for a day, you will get a very warm welcome and there are lots of different ways you can help.”

“I have volunteered at Nantgarw for two years and it’s the best thing I have done since I retired. I enjoy the interaction with visitors who are amazed at the fascinating story behind the production of porcelain here.

The other volunteers have become friends and we work as a team, helping out with catering, and everything else involved with running the museum. We are always ready to welcome more volunteers so why not think about joining us?”

“I am interested in a career working in museum archives but didn’t have any experience so decided to volunteer at Nantgarw. I have learnt about things such as object handling and storage. Now I want to get involved in creating digital archives.

I am getting really useful experience which I can add to my CV. It’s also a lovely place to be, there is a diverse range of volunteers from all sorts of backgrounds and I get to learn from them.”
