There has been a small number of posts regarding Stand Up To Racism’s stall at Carnival this year.
The issue concerns the removal of materials by Carnival security under direction from WMC Management.
The main ‘offending’ materials referenced a specific political party and person. The stall was on Senedd land, where no such material is permitted (which seems reasonable to me).
The Senedd clearly does not prohibit demonstrations or protests in general but must remain neutral in terms of parties.
The materials referred to a party with significant numbers in the Senedd and Senedd staff, regardless of personal opinions, would come under pressure for permitting this; which in turn will make it more difficult to get their full support for future Carnivals.
There may have been some misunderstanding and overreaction on either side at first but from what I’m told, SUTR eventually understood the restrictions and were willing to comply.
It must be said that SUTR made an informal request for table space at Carnival and were provided a covered stall free of charge. They also had a speaker on the main stage: and we don’t do that for everyone.
All in all, it’s incorrect to cast this as the social justice warriors vs Corporate interests.
SUTR will be welcome at BC27 (pending protocols) and BACA is hoping to be involved in the SUTR parade in October.
