Unearthing something new to my material explorations.

Using the process of smoke firings to imprint seaweed onto the surface of clay.

Covered in Penarth wild clay & engulfed by flames created a wonderful carbon trapped print onto the surface of this vessel.

The shell and carbonised material now slowly being milled to produce intaglio ink.

Still very much processing last weeks wood firing at

The absolute privilege to have done this with fellow CSAD ceramic & maker masters students & .celf working in unison, sharing quick glances and hand gestures; pivoting from wood pile to piano as we listen to the distinct murmurs and growns of the kiln surging in temperature.

Something quite primitive and intrinsically linked to community and devotion. For those who have followed my creative path for years it comes as no surprise that this was going to be a pivotal moment in my exploration into ceramics

Home Saggar firings no.1

Experimenting with saggar firing a slip cast inkwell.

Decorated with local clay slip and fired with seaweed.
Still getting to grips with burnishing such delicate vessels but loving how quick and easy I can do test firings with an old coffee tin in the log burner.

Returning to do my masters last week I realised I’ve only shared my ceramics experiments on stories.

This vessel was my first coil built pot. Decorated with a handmade brush and decorated using found clay and ash glaze from forest fawr. (See last few slides for bisque fired results)

Naturally I had to take it back to the location the materials were sourced from. I just love how the colours reflect the same palette from once it came.

Excited to see what other experiments I’ll get upto this year

What’s in a name?

On the 11th November 2024 we welcomed our beautiful son Rowan into the world. Lost in our little family bubble we’ve spent the last week at home resting up , spending late mornings in bed drinking cold cups of tea, raving away at 3am and finding myself in floods of tears thinking how could I possibly love something this much.

My pregnancy and labour experience wouldn’t have been so empowering, liberating and positive if it wasn’t for the support of my or the incredible midwife team at Heath Hospital

I’ll be taking a social media break - “a wintering” as such to fully embrace motherhood, sharing the occasional work in progress or behind the scene stories.

See you in 2025

Something different and very much a work in progress will be landing on the grid soon.

But perhaps for now, we’ll just enjoy some of these beautiful textures and close ups.

The Pay It Forward scheme & why I’ve incorporated it.

Samsara
Drypoint tetra pack print
on hand painted background
Varied editions of 15

Inspired by ginkgo leaves and their symbolism of resilience, healing and longevity across various cultures and religions. Ginkgo bilboas have been told to be the tree Buddha gained enlightenment under.

This print was made using fresh safflower petals and annotto seeds to produce a buttery yellow under painting whilst the etching ink was made using charred leaves. Creating a balance between the various stages of lifecycles. Accepting the uncontrollable nature of natural pigments these prints express my appreciating beauty of impermanence.

These varied editions prints have headed off to Alice of for the imprinted print swap.

I have a limited amount of artist proofs and misprints that I will list on my website and instagram later this month
