Covid Rules Update:

As of today, face masks are no longer a legal requirement in most public settings apart from shops, public transport, medical and care settings and close contact services such as hairdressers. As a result, this is no longer something that we will be enforcing on our premises, as we don’t fit into any of those categories. However, we would kindly ask that, if at all possible, you continue to wear masks in the communal areas of the building out of consideration for others.

We are pleased to announce that from this Friday 28th January we will be removing the limit on the number of people we can have in our rooms that we put in place a few weeks ago. This follows the Welsh Government’s announcement of a return to ‘Alert Level 0’. It will still be a requirement that masks are worn in the communal areas of our building, unless otherwise exempt.

SERVICE UPDATE

Hope you all had a great Christmas. We’ve been asked a few times what the new Welsh Govt rules that came into force on Boxing Day mean for us. We hope this provides some clarity:

The good news is that we are not required to close. However, the Welsh Government’s return to a revised version of ‘Alert Level 2’ rules does state that there is; “A general requirement of 2m social distancing in all premises open to the public and workplaces, where reasonable.”

Considering this, we will be going back to limiting the number of people we can have in a room until this requirement eases. This means up to 6 people per room in our standard rooms and a maximum of 8 in our largest room. This will help maintain social distancing and keep everyone as safe as possible.

Coronavirus Service Update – Tuesday 27th April 2021

Following last Friday’s Welsh Government announcement that ‘organised indoor activities’ can resume from the 3rd of May, we feel that puts us in a position to welcome back all of our customers from that date onwards regardless of whether there is a future paid engagement, commercial release or any of the other conditions that we were subject to since our last announcement a few weeks ago.

🛑🛑 We’re REOPENING (version 3.0) 🛑🛑

It’s with great excitement that we can announce we’ve decided to reopen on the 12th April and are now taking bookings. Having considered many factors, we feel it’s the right time to see what demand is like and give it a go. However, it’s not all good news. The current government guidelines around rehearsing limit the types of customers we can accept bookings from. Below are the main categories and what the rules mean for each. We hope this provides some clarity and it’s obviously for you to judge where you and your band fit in to these. Our usual Covid measures remain in place including: staggered sessions, 2m distancing, masks etc.

Professional/semi-professional musicians:

The definition of professional/semi-professional is quite broad and essentially refers to anyone where music is either a primary or secondary source of income. Basically, if you’re working towards a paid engagement or writing/arranging for a commercial release, then you’re allowed to rehearse. This also means that if you’re going to be paid £10 or £100,000, then that is considered a professional engagement. It doesn’t have to be a predetermined fee either. For example, if you’re playing for a cut of the door, then that counts. There is no timeframe or limit for when the gig/event/release has to take place, it can be tonight or months in the future. Essentially, rehearsing for these activities is not something you can do from home, then you go to work, i.e. Musicbox.

Solo musicians/same household or extended bubble:

You’re on your own or with someone you live with or are bubbled with right? Therefore, the only person/persons you’re going to be confined to a room with are yourselves, so you can book in.

Recording:

This is a professional activity. Should you be using our studios to record a demo to be used for booking gigs, seeking professional contracts or recording for a commercial release, then this is considered work. You’re good to go.

Broadcasting/Streaming:

Any filming/live performance for broadcasting is considered a work activity should it involve any possible reward at any point, from song writing residuals/royalties to donations made to your PayPal account in respect of the broadcast. You’re good to go.

Private teaching:

The Musician’s Union’s published advice is that private tuition can happen if the lessons are “...for the purposes of obtaining a regulated qualification, meeting the entry requirements for an education institution, or to undertake exams and assessments”. If your students are studying towards some kind of attainment then you’re good to go and if they’re studying towards an RSL award exam, then the chances are they’ll be taking their exam in the familiar surroundings of Musicbox, as we’re an RSL Awards examination centre.

Amateur groups:

This is the bad news! If you get together to play purely for fun, a musical ‘kick about in the park’, with no pretence towards a paid engagement or other endeavour, then you’re still subject to the rules regarding no mixing indoors with members from other households outside of your bubble. As a result, it’s with sadness that we can’t accept your booking at this time. We hope it won’t be too long before restrictions ease and we can get you back in, but the guidelines around rehearsing just don’t allow it for the moment.

We hope all of this gives you some clarity moving forward.

Here we go again...

We hope everyone is coping and staying safe and well.

We’re at another Welsh Government 3-week review point and we had hoped today’s announcement would allow us to go ahead with our plan to reopen this Monday 15th March. Despite some close contact services restarting, not as much relating to non-essential services was as forthcoming as we had expected. The ‘stay local’ restriction, which means travel distance is limited, would also be problematic for a lot of our customers.

In light of this, we’ll have to postpone reopening and we’ll be contacting anyone affected over the next couple of weeks to rearrange again. On a positive note, we’re currently working on our own strategy for a phased return, in line with the government guidelines, and we hope to bring you more details on that next week.

Thanks again for your continued patience and support. We’re as frustrated as you but we hope to have some better news next week.
