Forthcoming exhibition:

Kevin Sinnott 1947 - 2026
LAST DANCE ON THE HILLS
DAWNS OLAF AR Y BRYNIAU
5 September / Medi - 11 October / Hydref 2026

Celf Gallery presents Kevin Sinnott: Last Dance on the Hills – Dawns Olaf ar y Bryniau, an exhibition of predominantly new work by one of Wales’s most celebrated contemporary painters. Following Kevin’s recent passing, the exhibition has acquired an unexpected poignancy. What was conceived as an exciting new chapter in his work is now a final testament to an artist who remained utterly committed to painting until the end. Regular visits to his Pontycymer and Pont-y-rhyl  studios since his last solo exhibition with us in 2024 allowed works to be selected for what was always going to be a much anticipated exhibition.

Never one to shy away from grand, passionate emotional themes, these final paintings feel both deeply personal and profoundly generous. A striking self-portrait sits alongside tender reflections on family and the communities that long inspired him. In this poignant and memorable exhibition, the storytelling continues, the passion remains, and the dance on the hills goes on.

We are deeply grateful to Kevin’s family for their support and generosity in bringing this exhibition to fruition, and for allowing us to celebrate an extraordinary artist.

Our annual Summer Exhibition comes to a close today.

We open again on 5 September with an exhibition by Kevin Sinnott (1946 - 2026)

We are open by appointment, subject to availability, and available by email for any enquiries.

We leave you with a series of works by Annette Marie Townsend, entitled ‘A Study in Black and Gold’.

The series brings together wax-sculpted blackberry plants and preserved insects within museum entomology drawers, drawing from Townsend’s observations of nature within the urban environment, alongside memories of her twenty-year career as a natural science conservator at Amgueddfa Cymru / National Museum Wales.

The series is, in part, informed by the museum’s internationally significant blackberry collection, which contains over 15,000 herbarium specimens and is recognised as a major scientific reference tool. The works explore the relationships between nature, scientific classification, conservation and environmental change, revealing the complexity and fragility of seemingly ordinary urban ecosystems.

“The wax sculpture appears to grow into the ordered structure of the drawer itself, creating small, diorama-like habitats where botany, entomology, scientific classification, preservation and living systems collide.

Rendered in black and white using a combination of natural beeswax and paraffin wax — a by-product of the oil industry — the works move between light and darkness, observation and intervention, conservation and environmental loss.”

Kevin Sinnott 1947 – 2026

It is with great sadness that Celf Gallery announce the passing of Welsh artist Kevin Sinnott, on Monday 27th July.

Kevin’s love and zest for life played out in his exuberant and colourful paintings. He leaves behind a remarkable artistic legacy that transformed everyday Welsh life into images of universal humanity. His paintings will continue to speak of love, memory, place and the enduring spirit of Wales for generations to come.

His scheduled exhibition at Celf Gallery this September will now stand as a tribute and celebration of his life and work.

‘The valleys he painted are the richer for his affection — and Welsh art will be all the poorer without him’.

Our thoughts are with his family.

—————

Gyda thristwch mawr mae Celf Gallery yn cyhoeddi marwolaeth yr artist Cymreig Kevin Sinnott, ddydd Llun 27 Gorffennaf.

Roedd cariad a brwdfrydedd at fywyd i’w gweld yn baentiadau lliwgar a bywiog Kevin. Bydd ei baentiadau’n parhau i sôn am gariad, atgofion, lle ac ysbryd parhaol Cymru am genedlaethau i ddod. Mae’n gadael gwaddol artistig rhyfeddol ar ei ôl.

Bydd yr arddangosfa a drefnwyd yn Celf Gallery ym mis Medi bellach yn sefyll fel teyrnged a dathliad o’i fywyd a’i waith.

‘Mae cymoedd Cymru a baentiodd yn gyfoethocach oherwydd ei hoffter — a bydd celfyddyd Cymru yn dlotach hebddo’.

Mae ein meddyliau gyda’i deulu.

This seems as good a time as ever, for reasons that scarcely need stating, to remind everyone what a privilege it was to exhibit Clive Hicks-Jenkins’s extraordinary illustrations for The Iliad and The Odyssey earlier this year. Created for the Folio Society recent editions of Emily Wilson’s translations.

The marriage of Clive’s style to Homer’s Achaean world is a curiously fitting one. There is something in his work that feels almost antediluvian, as though it draws from deep within the mantle of the visual language of myth, drama and the fantastical, entirely at home among the gods, monsters and heroes of The Odyssey.

While that exhibition concluded in March, we’re delighted that visitors can still see Clive’s work as part of our Summer Exhibition, which continues until 16 August.
