Have you entered the Junior Handwriting Competition at this year's Village Show?

This is a wonderful opportunity for children to showcase their neat handwriting, care and presentation skills. This year's handwriting class features the final verse from the winning Bardic Poem of the 2026 School Eisteddfod, written by Year 6 pupil Rhys Mahoney.

🖋️ Take your time, write carefully, and produce your very best work. Every entry has a chance to shine!

The text to be copied is:

"In the deep dark valleys of Wales,
the dragon's slippery slate scales are as protective as an army,
the Welsh dragon's teeth are as sharp as mountain tips,
and his razor-sharp thrashing tail is like a miner's pick axe,
the dragon's tongue is as black as coal."

Calling all crafters, makers and creative minds!

Class 61 in the Handicraft Section invites you to create a Christmas card using any medium or material. Whether you enjoy painting, drawing, papercraft, embroidery, quilting, calligraphy, mixed media, or something completely unique, this is your chance to showcase your talents.

There are no limits to your imagination – traditional or modern, simple or elaborate, handmade Christmas cards of all styles are welcome.

🧀🥯 Cheese Scone Challenge at the Village Show! 🥯🧀

Last year we challenged residents with Vegan Sausage Rolls… and this year we’re keeping the savoury baking tradition alive with a new test of skill — Cheese Scones!

Do you make a cheese scone worthy of village legend? Or are your scones more “rustic interpretation” than bakery perfection? Either way — we want YOU to enter!

Whether they’re beautifully golden, slightly wonky, towering proudly… or mysteriously flat, every batch deserves its moment in the spotlight. After all, the judges can’t taste confidence — only cheese and good baking! 😄

So channel your inner star baker, dust off the rolling pin, dig out the cheese grater, and give it a go. Just try not to accidentally use sugar instead of salt…

Get creative and help support nature by entering this year’s Handicraft Section with your very own homemade Insect Hotel!

Whether it’s rustic, colourful, quirky, tiny or grand, we’d love to see your craftsmanship and imagination on display. Insect hotels are a fantastic way to encourage wildlife into our gardens while creating something beautiful and practical.

Use wood, bamboo, pinecones, bark, tiles, recycled materials — the possibilities are endless!

🐝 Important note: no actual bugs included please! Your insect hotel should arrive vacant and ready for future guests only.

Do you make a delicious cookie that friends and family always ask for? Why not enter this year’s Village Show Cookie Competition!

We’re inviting bakers of all ages and abilities to showcase their favourite homemade cookies. Competitors are asked to submit:

✨ 5 homemade cookies ✨

You can be as traditional or creative as you like — chocolate chip, oat, ginger, fruity, shortbread-style or something completely unique!

🚫 Please note: peanuts are not permitted in any entries.

So dust off your mixing bowls, get baking, and join in the fun. We can’t wait to see (and smell!) all the wonderful entries on show day! 🍪🏆

🍷🍎 Homemade Wine & Cider Returns to the Village Show! 🍎🍷

We are delighted to announce that, for the first time in many years, Homemade Wine and Cider classes are being re-introduced to the Village Show!

Have you been perfecting a fruity country wine, crafting a crisp cider, or experimenting with traditional recipes? Now is your chance to showcase your hard work and creativity.

Whether you’re an experienced home brewer or simply enjoy making your own for family and friends, we’d love to see your entries and celebrate this wonderful tradition once again.

Dust off those bottles, and join in the fun — let’s make the return of Homemade Wine & Cider a fantastic success! 🍾✨

🍞 Culinary Class 48 – Bara Brith Challenge! 🍞

After many years of Class 48 being a Fruit Cake competition, we are excited to introduce a new tradition this year — Bara Brith!

We’d love residents to get involved and showcase their baking talents with this delicious Welsh classic. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or giving it a go for the first time, why not enter?

📖 Official Recipe for Class 48:

• 250gm self-raising flour
• 100gm dark muscovado sugar
• 300ml strong hot tea
• 400gm mixed dried fruit
• 1 free range egg, lightly beaten
• 1 teaspoon mixed spice
• Honey to glaze

Method:
Line a 900gm loaf tin with baking paper. Put the dried fruit into a bowl and pour over the tea. Mix in the sugar and stir well. Leave to soak for at least 6 hours or overnight.

Next day, sift the flour and spice into the soaked fruit (no need to drain the tea) and stir in the egg. Blend well together and pour into the tin.

Bake at 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4 for approximately 1–1½ hours until risen and cooked through. Glaze with honey, leave to cool on a rack, and store for 2 days before eating for the best flavour.
