Our ‘New Horizon’ exhibition has come to an end, slightly ahead of schedule. We’d like to say thank you to everyone who came to see it and/or supported us online and a HUGE thank you to for giving us the space to exhibit for such a long show 😉
Thank you 💕✨

We are all working on separate projects at the moment, but hope to come together again for another exhibition soon, which will include some of the other Welsh Hub members 🙌🤩

💕✨

All of us in the Welsh Hub would like to say Happy International Women’s Day to all those identifying as a woman today 💕. It just happens that we are all women in our group, although men from the who are living/working in Wales are most welcome.
As a group of women working together in Wales, we encourage and support each other in our group and solo projects. Life is so much easier when you’ve found your tribe…don’t you agree?

Much love to for bringing us together and for the feminine energy circulating today 🙏💕✨

My study of painted wesekh collars on ancient Egyptian mummys, and the sacred symbolic images in them, I found the 'Sun' hieroglyph repeatedly features.

What I also found was the sun hieroglyph image, was used as the basis for other symbols featured, working out what their spiritual reference are to the afterlife has been my focus in this collection at the 'New Horizon' exhibition at Llanover Hall Arts Centre Cardiff Wsles UK.

Wesekh Collars

The painted collar on Tasheriankh's coffin case takes up quite a large area so what is it and why is it there?
So during my lockdown studies what did I find out, they are called a wesekh, we often see paintings of the broad necklace worn across the shoulders of ancient Egyptians made up of beads, but these painted funerary collars have rows or registers as I refer to them, of repeated symbols, some easily recognisable others not so.

The painted images and hieroglyphs on an ancient Egyptian coffin are to aid the deceased's transition into the afterlife and for their life in the afterlife. So this must then apply to these painted collars, they have a significance and a function.

So I thought I would search out, study and paint other wesekh collars, this is a collection which I am growing. My aim to bring them to the forefront of the conversation of ancient Egyptian funary images and not have them passed over as just something decorative. Therefore, I am attending at present a course on hieroglyphs with the Egyptian Exploration Society and currently writing my conversation about wesekh collars, the symbols, their representation, significance, and do they have relevance today?

Whilst we were setting up the exhibition in Llanover Hall Arts Centre we managed to take some nice photos and videos of Mels Work. She is hosting Welsh hub this week so it seemed a good time to share some of them. I particularly like the repetitions in this one and the sharp ex*****on of her work.

Tasheriankh

My first painting inspired by ancient Egyptian funeral artefacts, shown yesterday, I based the design on a sketch I had made and then added colours and extra features, my interest captured, I wanted to revisit the original, but because we were in lockdown I had to rely on the internet. So I went looking for this mummy and I found her, she is part of the the Egypt and Sudan collection of the Manchester Museum, her name is Tasheriankh from Akhmim c300-30 BCE, and that she's in 'The Golden Mummies of Egypt' exhibition, currently touring the globe and will return to Manchester this November in conjunction with the celebration of the discovery of King Tutankhamun tomb 100 years ago, and the opening of a new exhibition space, at Manchester Museum, spring 2023.
You can see photos of this mummy which were taken for the book accompanying this travelling exhibition here.

This week it is my turn for Instagram takeover , promoting the 'New Horizon Exhibition' at Llanover Hall Arts Centre, Cardiff, Wales UK.
From sketch, to first painting, to collection and exhibition, all inspired by my visit to the National Museum of Wales exhibition, 'Treasures: Adventures in Archaeology', in 2016. Where I was captivated by the painted collar on an ancient Egyptian mummy case. However, it was not until 2019 I was able to start my painting, and was unable to return and finish until the Easter break of 2020 due to lockdown. I was so pleased with my painting and it's vibrancy, it led me to want to find out more about the mummy which sparked my interest. This painting is not featured in the exhibition.
