Urgent Update: To everyone who has been patiently waiting, asking, hoping, and even doubting whether The Westgate would ever reopen โ we owe you a heartfelt apology.
The Westgate Pub has been closed since 2016, and we know that for many of you it hasnโt just been a building behind locked doors, but a place full of memories, stories, laughter, and community.
Over the years weโve received countless messages, comments, and conversations asking the same question: โWhen is The Westgate coming back?โ The honest answer is that the journey has been far more complicated, slower, and at times frustrating โ for you and for us โ than anyone ever expected.
At one stage during this long process, there was a genuine change of heart about the future of the building. Options were explored to turn the site into a hostel for the homeless, or alternatively short-term accommodation such as Airbnb. These ideas came from a place of wanting to make positive use of the space, especially during a time when reopening as a pub felt uncertain.
However, after much reflection, discussion, and listening to the community, that decision has changed. The vision has come back full circle: The Westgate hopefully deserves to be a pub and restaurant again, and that is now firmly the goal, although sadly it looks like the Pub will be open before the restaurant.
Unfortunately, along the way we have been let down by a number of unprofessional builders and contractors. Some work was not completed, some was completed to a poor standard, and in certain cases work had to be undone and redone entirely. Safety has always been, and will always remain, the top priority โ for our future staff and for every customer who walks through the door โ and that alone has caused unavoidable delays. Cutting corners was never an option.
Another factor, which we want to be honest about, is that we have also been involved in other building projects during this time. These projects demanded time, attention, and resources, and that has undeniably had an impact on the pace of progress at The Westgate. That said, it does not change the fact that we know how long some people have waited, and we fully accept responsibility for the frustration this has caused.
At present, there is still no confirmed opening date, and we understand that this is disappointing to hear. What we can say is that progress is being made, lessons have been learned, and we are moving forward with the clear intention of reopening The Westgate as a proper pub and restaurant โ one that Cardiff can be proud of.
Thank you for your patience, your passion, and your continued belief in The Westgate. We havenโt forgotten what this place means to people.
