A song about the art of crochet.....or is it?
It started purely about the joys and merits and community brought together via informal crochet circles, and many of our choir members love of it, spurred on by expert, Adona. However the concept grew into something a little more profound. There are almost 30 languages woven into this song (with love) So many people involved creating melodies phrases etc.
Recorded at oasis, Cardiff by Hannah. Most pics by Amy Peckham, a couple from other projects (Salome Francis photography) and many from simple mobile phones.
Put together by MD Laura and with massive thanks to all the wonderful contributors of languages and melodies, and who are treasured members of our WOW Choir project!

Amazing things we can create . With a needle a hook and a string
With the hook and string between our fingers. We can make just about anything

Double crochet, loop, slip, stitch. Single crochet, reverse single stitch
Treble crochet, granny stitch…La la la la la!
(Maqbool, Dari also means “Acceptable” مقبول. in Arabic..)

Adona, fastest fingers in the town. Adona, the designers crown
Hussein, making intricate hats. Hussein, though, sadly, not for cats
And Ashleiy, makes a bag to carry fruit. Ashleiy, also one for her flute
And not forgetting Wai Chin. 我在这里. Wǒ zài zhèlǐ (I’m here!)
And not forgetting Wai Chin! 我係呢度: mor hi li do. (I’m here!)

Crochet: Coats for goats – Hats for cats – Jumpers for cheaters –
Scarves for elephants - Socks for crocodiles – Dice for mice –Gloves for doves – Flowers for everyone!

Alwan Voices at Glitter Pride 🌈🎶

Last Sunday, Alwan Voices had its first-ever performance at Glitter Pride at the Temple of Peace in Cardiff! 🏳️‍🌈✨

Led by Ayoub Boukhalfa, the group came together to celebrate community, culture and connection through music.

The first half of the song was created collectively by the group as a welcoming song, bringing together different languages and voices to create a message of belonging and welcome. 🌍🎶

It was a beautiful celebration of our diversity, our stories and the power of singing together.

Kulu shi mneeh كلشي منيح - Meaning: Everything is good - in Arabic

The theme for this song comes from the following statement: 'Children have the right to relax!'
Brought to the group as an idea to inspire group songwriting by participant, with his statement
“Children have the right to relax!” Article 31 of the UNCRC Human Rights act.
A child has the fundamental right to rest, leisure, play, and recreational activities appropriate to their age. As well as the right to freely participate in cultural life and the arts.

We hope you enjoy our youth groups latest song in 4 different languages.

A big day for our project, Musiqaa Itura Tradd, today. Dudú Kouate joined us fresh from WOMAD ( travelling back to Berlin tomorrow), and Alan Keary (Shunya) drove from Manchester and back to share their music culture and connecting, liberating improvisational music with us.
An enormous amount of cultural information and philosophy was shared with us as well as lots of participation, encouragement, and also a treat to listen to the duo perform to us throughout the day. (both musicians work independently but fairly regularly perform together).
They delivered 3 workshops throughout the day, first one aimed at our collaborators oasis families, the 2nd aimed at our regular and lead families for the project and lastly for mainly our regular and not so regular adult choir members.

What an insightful and meaningful day we've had with Cerys Hafana, her wonderful harp playing and vocals. Folk songs, original compositions, and interpretations of old previously hidden Welsh texts. I think we had to stifle the odd tear or 2 as Cerys' playing was so moving and beautiful. All empowering to our project participants and team via 'Air harp' technique (you've heard of 'Air guitar' ;-)) then the chance to try a melody using the Air harp technique but on actually small harps!
We discovered a lot of connections to the songs and music of the choir. Christianah's song 'Courage' fits (almost perfectly) the chord sequence of the melody Cerys taught to us. This also connects with the Kwela whistle music style of South Africa we'd been working on. Emmy on bass, we had the most magnificent and in the moment 'mash up' of styles.
Cerys ran 3 sessions
1 with our mums and families of Oasis
1 with our afternoon open group and youth group
And lastly, with our regulars.
Cerys performed an improvisation to which June and 3 other dancers added movement. More 'Air harp' and more jamming together.
The result: a lot of inspired minds and gently empowered people who gained joy and learning through the connection Cerys brought to us, and across the generations of the choir project.
