Treat for Messiaen fans! Excerpt from ‘Apparition de l’église éternelle’ performed by Steve Ansell on Herne Bay’s mighty organ in the Old Church, Mortimer Street. Part of Herne Bay Festival.

The rousing Dead Horse Morris dancers at Herne Bay folk festival wear green rather than black face paint- a remnant of the tradition of ‘blacking’ in 18th century English folk tradition. Anti-begging laws meant that performances often included elements of disguise and protest against authority. Performances, as well as political protest, often involved cross-dressing and blackening faces to evade identification, reflecting the growing class tensions in the English countryside.
