David Hockney has passed away at the age of 88.

One of Britain's most beloved artists, renowned not only for his extraordinary talent but also for his outspoken opinions, delivered in his unmistakable Yorkshire accent.

A master across a remarkable range of artistic forms, Hockney worked with paint, photography, and digital technology, including iPads. His creativity extended to etchings, lithographs, and stained-glass designs, and he moved effortlessly between large-scale opera set design and the delicate detail of pen-and-ink drawing.

Instantly recognisable with his bleached blond hair, round spectacles, and trademark flat cap, Hockney emerged as a leading figure in the art world during the 1960s and continued to attract huge audiences to exhibitions for decades.

In 2018, one of his iconic swimming pool paintings fetched almost £70 million at auction, setting a record for a living artist at the time. Despite his immense success, Hockney remained modest about the popularity of his work.

Throughout his career, he followed a simple philosophy: "Paint the things you love."

The Kent Art Quarter is an exciting new addition to the Kent County Show, celebrating the rich creativity and artistic talent found across the county. Showcasing some of Kent’s finest galleries, artists and makers, the Art Quarter is a vibrant hub for original art, ceramics, jewellery, woodwork, sculpture and much more. Visitors will have the opportunity to not only meet the artists behind the work, but also to support home-grown talent by purchasing directly at the show.

Located in the John Hendry Pavilion, between the Astor Ring and Countryside Ring, the Kent Art Quarter promises an inspiring and welcoming atmosphere for art lovers, collectors and curious visitors alike. Throughout the day, two live demonstration areas will feature artists and makers sharing their skills and creative processes, including watercolour painting, gelli printing, felting, potting and clay sculpture.

The Kent Art Quarter also celebrates the next generation of creativity. Entries from a county-wide art competition, open to all primary school children, will be on display throughout the event, while youngsters can enjoy a free craft activity hosted by competition sponsors Trail Blazers.

'The Curious Fox'
By Carne Griffith
Ltd Ed Print on Hahnemuhle 310gsm German Etching Paper with Hand-Torn Edges
Edition of 100
Signed and Numbered

Carne Griffiths creates his stunning drawings using calligraphy inks, graphite, and drinkable liquids such as tea, brandy, and wine. Focusing on the 'manipulation of the drawn line, ' Carne's work explores human, animal, geometric, and floral forms, in a combination of both literal and abstract translation.

Originally from Liverpool, Griffiths graduated from the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone (now UCA) in 1995. After completing a one-year KIAD fellowship and moving to London, he served an apprenticeship at the longest-established gold wire embroidery firm in the world. There, he worked as a designer for twelve years, eventually becoming the creative director. Carne produced intricate designs for the military and the film, theatre, fashion, and advertising industries. His designs were used for the uniforms in the films Valkyrie and The Last King of Scotland.  His ‘Red Death Coat’ was used in The Phantom of the Opera.

'Unquestionably beautiful and hypnotically complex, Carne's drawings are imbued with his love for the medium. Deploying an endless array of techniques, he creates wild and expressive works... Enviable draftsmanship, an illustrative instinct, a graphic eye and the raw energy of automatic process are joyfully allied to produce visually stunning works' - Eyestorm

Let your walls bloom this spring...

With an ALL NEW collection of original paintings by Alison Saunders! 🌼

Originally from Ashford, Alison lived in London before settling in Canterbury. Her artistic journey began in illustration and graphic design, which she studied at Kent Institute of Art & Design (now UCA). After a career in teaching and raising a family, Alison only recently returned to her easel, and now produces still lifes and landscapes in her favourite medium of oil.

An avid gardener, Alison draws much of her inspiration from the natural world, often painting en plein air. By experimenting with temperature and hue - whether through the immediacy of alla prima or the depth of traditional layering - she seeks to capture the essence of her subjects. Much of her work is a quiet study in observation, whether it be the posture of a flower, the gesture of a petal, or the slight movement of a leaf in the breeze.

Find Alison's all new collection at our gallery at 76 Castle Street Canterbury, or browse online: http://www.lilfordgallery.com/alison-saunders-castle-street

**ALL NEW FOR SPRING!!! **

We're excited to present a whole new collection of original paintings from the one and only Heidi Langridge!

Heidi's work is dedicated exclusively to the subject of birds; a focus stemming from her deep concern for the lost habitats of many of our native garden species.

Placing her birds centre stage against a backdrop of vibrant, complementary colours and billowing forms, Heidi's paintings have a sense of the dramatic, giving focus to birds without being too realistic. Instead, Heidi's aim is to celebrate the beauty and wonder of our native species through her own unique visual language. As Heidi describes it: 'These paintings are all about bringing birds closer into my life. If there was a heaven for birds, this could be it!'

You can find Heidi's joyful paintings at our gallery located at 76 Castle Street in Canterbury's beautiful Castle Quarter! Or browse online at: www.lilfordgallery.com/heidi-langridge
