CANNOCK EX-SERVICEMEN’S CLUB MALE VOICE CHOIR
In the early years, after the war, it became customary for a few of the members of the Cannock Ex-Servicemen’s Club, to gather round the piano for a singsong. The Choir developed rapidly and within the first year of its formation secured top place in competitive singing in a class of ten choirs. Since then over forty trophies and awards have been won.
The Choir then began a tradition of presenting an annual celebrity concert to the people of Cannock, inviting many famous brass bands, military bands and solo artists to appear on the programmes. In 1964 the choir was fortunate in securing the services of Pauline Gooch as accompanist and Deputy Conductor. Under Pauline’s guidance the choir developed further, building up a fine reputation for the quality of its musical performances. In early 1985 Selwyn Whitehouse took over as Musical Director and with his extensive musical knowledge, together with the invaluable assistance of his deputy conductor, Peter Carey (A chorister of long standing) did still further develop the choirs ability to sing from a large repertoire of traditional and more modern male voice arrangements, there by catering for a wide range of tastes amongst our audiences. Selwyn was succeeded after his retirement in June 1998 by Donald Morris an accomplished and experienced Musical Director, who engendered a fresh approach to professional standards of choral singing, combined with fun and enjoyment that was enjoyed by audience and choir alike. Mr Ron James, took over the reins on the 1st November 2000. Ron James is well known locally in the Staffordshire College Music Society. Ron aspires to widen Cannock Ex-Servicemen’s Club Choir’s repertoire and make his own love of music and distinctive style obvious in choir performances. Our then much loved accompanist Mrs Dorothy Bates who had served the choir loyally under the leadership of Selwyn Whitehouse, Donald Morris and Ron James, with her unfailing good humour, commitment and musical expertise which have made her a much admired and respected member of the choir so as when Ron James retired having completed his commitment with the choir Dorothy was a natural replacement as Musical Director. The present choir membership is sixteen, although small in numbers it has developed a fellowship coupled with a pride in its musical ability which audiences find reflected in the choirs performances. The choir are presently recruiting new singers, practice takes place every Monday evening at 19:30 hours in the Victoria Working Men’s Club, 116 Church Hill, Hednesford, Staffordshire, WS12 1BQ.
