“21 Guns” is Lillie’s favourite song in American Idiot because it feels like a real emotional pause in the show. It slows the pace down and gives the characters and the audience a chance to actually feel what’s happening rather than just being swept along by the energy of the rest of the musical.
She love that it’s about questioning whether fighting and holding on is really worth it, and ultimately wanting to let go. There’s something really powerful and vulnerable about that message, especially within a show that is otherwise so loud and rebellious.
The dance also gives Lily-May the opportunity to express that emotion physically and she thinks that contrast makes the number really special for her ✨
