Between April 1939 and April 1942, Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears enjoyed personally and professionally formative years in North America. Much of the dazzling song cycle Les Illuminations – settings of proto-surrealist poetry by Arthur Rimbaud – was composed early in their stay, and the vigorous Young Apollo for piano and strings premiered in August 1939.

50 years since Britten's death, we perform works of his and his very dear friend and mentor, Copland.

SO much energy and fun in our first concert with and in Norwich last night!

🌀 "It was amazing. I wanted to get up and dance."

Separated by a wall and two centuries... imagine the music that might have been written if Handel & Hendrix had been neighbours in real time.

Happily for us, Schubert & Brahms did cross paths with the Romani folk bands playing in the taverns of 19th century Vienna, and this created an amazing musical & cultural melting pot between classical & folk.

After the toils of the daytime, Schubert & Brahms would visit Vienna’s Red Hedgehog tavern to hear Romani folk musicians twist popular classical tunes into new styles.

🍥Join & ZRI Quintet for folk-infused arrangements of music by Schubert, Brahms, Haydn, Beethoven and Webern alongside traditional Hungarian and Romani music.
