What Acting Can Teach Us About Truth with Darren Cheek

🌱 Saturday 23 November 1.30pm to 5.30pm
🌱 The Signal Box Community Centre, Cambridge CB2 8DB
🌱 £40 (£25 concessions)

Come join us for an engaging workshop exploring the intersection of acting and truth. Discover how the art of acting can deepen our understanding of authenticity, vulnerability, and honesty in our daily lives. Whether you're a performer, therapist or just curious, this event promises to be thought-provoking and inspiring.

Truth lies at the heart of healthy human living – but also at the heart of great acting practice. In this workshop, Damn Cheek Artistic Director Darren Cheek offers the chance to explore the interplay between those two arenas, and so appreciate both more fully.

Darren has been a professional actor, writer and director for over 20 years – and for 14 of those years he’s also been a practising psychotherapist. He continues to be enthralled, inspired and fascinated by just how closely therapeutic theories of ‘healthy, authentic, actualised’ living coexist with performance theories and practices of ‘great, real, true‘ acting.

Darren ran a very popular event for us in December 2023 and is returning to run a longer, four-hour workshop to dive deeper into the topic.

Come and learn the fundamentals of the technique taught by Sanford Meisner to some of Hollywood's biggest stars over the course of 60 years.

Living truthfully under imaginary circumstances’ was Sanford Meisner’s definition of acting. Meisner based his technique on three principles: repetition, emotional preparation, and improvisation (authenticity). In this workshop we will focus on how the technique develops listening skills, instinctive responses, and keeping the focus on our scene partner rather than ourselves.

Martin trained as an actor at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating with a distinction from the 3-year BA Acting course. He went on to work extensively in TV, film, theatre and radio. Having studied a variety of methods and techniques at Central, he always returns to the simplicity of the Meisner Technique in both his own process, and how he prefers to teach.
