Introducing our marvellous Music team! Continue reading to find out more about them and what they've been doing behind the scenes to make 'That's the Spirit!' happen...
Alison-Roary (RA) Neat
Hey, I'm Alison-Roary, though most people call me RA (they/them). I am an Ancient CULE who started their Light Entertainment journey way back in The Before Times of 2013 as an undergraduate at Sidney Sussex. My first crew role was as Musical Director for The Little Mermaid that Could in 2014 and I wrote my first script for CULES, Unfrozen, in 2017. I have since moved to The Other Place and been involved in several OULES shows, including taking up the mantle of Musical Director once more, together with Cameron, for the first OULES radio show in 2020, The Radio Show at the End of the World. I was therefore keen to work with Cameron again, as well as many other talented Light Entertainers, to produce the original tracks for the radio show of That's The Spirit!! I've also read a few small parts and written several songs for various online CULES shows over the pandemic. When I heard that CULES would be doing a live show of That's The Spirit!, I was very excited, as well as honoured that they wished to use the original music produced by Cameron and me. I'm super hype to watch the show!!
Cameron Alsop
Ahoy! I’m Cameron (They/Them) a long-time member of OULES, and helped compose and arrange the music for TTS. It was a lot of fun getting to record all the different instruments and things for the original show, and I’m super excited to be getting to see it performed live!
Mahon Hughes
I must express my delight to see this show brought forth to the Cambridge stage! I am very glad I had the relishable roles of Meat Vendor, Bodyguard 1, Mechanical Voice, Butler, and of course Cabbage Merchant. My Cambridge signing debut was realised with the Meat Vendor song and I can attribute my singular future musical casting to only this success. Sadly I have now departed the clutches of the committee, society and the city, but I have loved every moment I have spent with CULES. Toodle-pip, till morrow!
Thea Fennell
Hello, hello, hello: I’m Thea! As well as stepping into the legendary shoes of Char Vine, taking up the LIVE mantle of Hazel Hadley, I am the guilty party responsible for writing Home Sweet Home and At The Carnival Today... Working under RA’s guidance for the original radio show was a privilege and a pleasure – and I can’t wait to share these songs with you all LIVE! Now, did I mention this show is LIVE? Oh, also, in my “spare” time I’m doing a PhD in Computational Genomics. This mostly involves sitting at my computer in the wee hours and swearing when it doesn’t work. So actually, it’s a lot like editing a radio show, now that I think about it…
Maya Walker
Hiii, I’m Maya (she/her) and I’m very confused and delighted to be here all the way from Oxford! Working with CULES online back in the dark ages was an absolute joy, and I was blown away by the talented producers and performers of my silly little songs! I’m honoured to be seeing them live in person. I have written lots of other silly songs for OULES, and have to confess to spending a lot of my university experience in acapella groups. If you see me self-indulgently singing along to Slice of Life or Karen Will Fall, no you didn’t ❤️
James Hartley
Composer of 'I'm a Karen', the iconic villain song of the musical!
Char Vine
Oh hey, it’s me again, Char, you might know me from that last post, but here I am once more - like a badger stalking in the shadows. I had the privilege of writing three songs for ‘That’s the Spirit Live!’ (The Opening Number, Life is a Merry-go-round and Borble's Burgs) adding to the already amazing score created by the very talented radio music team you can also find out about in this post! I’ve been writing music for CULES since 2020, and as someone who was very much convinced I just couldn’t compose and was absolutely rubbish at it, I couldn’t be more thankful to this society for slapping me across the face (metaphorically) and throwing me head first (again metaphorically) back into the musical arena.
