Heenal Shah
Hello lovely people, I’m Heenal (she/her) 2nd year historian and I’ll be the sexy mysterious lady working magic up in the lighting box while you laugh at this wonderful show. TTS sounded super fun and special to me, dealing with a lot of the issues that wlw face as they’re negotiating their identities with the lives they thought they’ve created around them. It seemed like a very lovely way to dip into my first prod role this year, and I’m very excited for the palette we’ve chosen for the show! I hope you enjoy it all, and give me an extra loud cheer at the end, won’t you darling? ;)

Rynn Hotwani
Hey! I’m Rynn, a final year PBS student and also the writer of this show. I’ve been a part of CULES since 2020, dabbling in acting, graphics, directing, publicity, and even working to create the shiny new role of Accessibility Officer! I am incredibly grateful that this society was kind enough to let me put this show on twice - first in radio form with our friends over at OULES, and now in real life! I wrote this script at a time where I was struggling to understand my own identity, and I was hard-pressed to find wholesome content that also dealt with the issues I was experiencing. I hope this show can help others and put a smile on their faces just like it did for me when I needed it the most.

Alison-Roary (RA) Neat
Hey, I'm Alison-Roary, though most people call me RA (they/them). I am an Ancient CULE who started their Light Entertainment journey way back in The Before Times of 2013 as an undergraduate at Sidney Sussex. My first crew role was as Musical Director for The Little Mermaid that Could in 2014 and I wrote my first script for CULES, Unfrozen, in 2017. I have since moved to The Other Place and been involved in several OULES shows, including taking up the mantle of Musical Director once more, together with Cameron, for the first OULES radio show in 2020, The Radio Show at the End of the World. I was therefore keen to work with Cameron again, as well as many other talented Light Entertainers, to produce the original tracks for the radio show of That's The Spirit!! I've also read a few small parts and written several songs for various online CULES shows over the pandemic. When I heard that CULES would be doing a live show of That's The Spirit!, I was very excited, as well as honoured that they wished to use the original music produced by Cameron and me. I'm super hype to watch the show!!

Cameron Alsop
Ahoy! I’m Cameron (They/Them) a long-time member of OULES, and helped compose and arrange the music for TTS. It was a lot of fun getting to record all the different instruments and things for the original show, and I’m super excited to be getting to see it performed live!

Mahon Hughes
I must express my delight to see this show brought forth to the Cambridge stage! I am very glad I had the relishable roles of Meat Vendor, Bodyguard 1, Mechanical Voice, Butler, and of course Cabbage Merchant. My Cambridge signing debut was realised with the Meat Vendor song and I can attribute my singular future musical casting to only this success. Sadly I have now departed the clutches of the committee, society and the city, but I have loved every moment I have spent with CULES. Toodle-pip, till morrow!

Thea Fennell
Hello, hello, hello: I’m Thea! As well as stepping into the legendary shoes of Char Vine, taking up the LIVE mantle of Hazel Hadley, I am the guilty party responsible for writing Home Sweet Home and At The Carnival Today... Working under RA’s guidance for the original radio show was a privilege and a pleasure – and I can’t wait to share these songs with you all LIVE! Now, did I mention this show is LIVE? Oh, also, in my “spare” time I’m doing a PhD in Computational Genomics. This mostly involves sitting at my computer in the wee hours and swearing when it doesn’t work. So actually, it’s a lot like editing a radio show, now that I think about it…

Maya Walker
Hiii, I’m Maya (she/her) and I’m very confused and delighted to be here all the way from Oxford! Working with CULES online back in the dark ages was an absolute joy, and I was blown away by the talented producers and performers of my silly little songs! I’m honoured to be seeing them live in person. I have written lots of other silly songs for OULES, and have to confess to spending a lot of my university experience in acapella groups. If you see me self-indulgently singing along to Slice of Life or Karen Will Fall, no you didn’t ❤️

James Hartley
Composer of 'I'm a Karen', the iconic villain song of the musical!

Char Vine
Oh hey, it’s me again, Char, you might know me from that last post, but here I am once more - like a badger stalking in the shadows. I had the privilege of writing three songs for ‘That’s the Spirit Live!’ (The Opening Number, Life is a Merry-go-round and Borble's Burgs) adding to the already amazing score created by the very talented radio music team you can also find out about in this post! I’ve been writing music for CULES since 2020, and as someone who was very much convinced I just couldn’t compose and was absolutely rubbish at it, I couldn’t be more thankful to this society for slapping me across the face (metaphorically) and throwing me head first (again metaphorically) back into the musical arena.

Happy Valentine's Day from all of us at 'That's the Spirit!' In celebration of this most romantic holiday, we bestow upon you a beautiful rendition of 'Stacy's Mom' or rather 'Darcy's Mom', sung & written by Thea Fennell, our very own beloved Hazel Hadley, with backing vocals by Char Vine. Enjoy! And don't forget to get your tickets for the show (in two days!!!) and donate to the Trussell Trust.

Hi! I’m a first year Englit who made the poster and sketches for the character pages

If you are quiet, you might just be able to hear the resounding thud of a kind, well-intentioned, awkwardly clumsy psychology student falling over head first into a pile of snow in Narnia, way at the back of the closet. It must be said Hazel Hadley’s, played by Thea Fennell, first choice of escapism would not be within the pages of a novel, but behind a phone screen in a rather cutesy cottagecore social simulation game that shall remain nameless in order to preserve Hazel’s perfectly formulated reputation and slowly disintegrating dignity. After all, admitting you actually enjoy playing dating sims, ironically, is much easier in the digital world. In real life, being a 20-something trying to navigate the rocky road of expectations and conventions is undoubtedly much, much harder…

Video Description:
The video shows a character selection screen in a mobile dating game. The character currently selected is ‘Hazel’, a woman with short, curly dark brown hair wearing pale green shorts dungarees, a patterned off-the-shoulder white shirt, patterned knee high socks and brown Doc Martens. While she waits for the player to select her, she shifts from foot to foot holding a large, fluffy white cat plushie. A speech bubble pops up in the bottom left of the screen reading “Improve your flirting skills!” After a while, Hazel’s idle animation begins and she pets the head of the plushie cat, nuzzling her face in its fluffy fur, before going back to swaying from foot to foot waiting.
At the top of the screen there is an illustration of a pink, glittery unicorn with the text ‘That’s the Spirit’ in purple over the top. To the right of this logo there is a pink bubble text box that includes the options ‘menu’, ‘settings’ and ‘exit’ and a pink, glittery frog camera with the words ‘screenshot’ above it. Below this there is an empty heart metre and the subtitle ‘Stats and Skills’ with an illustration of a trophy. The stats are as follows: +5 Creativity, +2 Cat Care and -5 Denial.
Once the player selects Hazel, all text and illustrations fade away. A loading card appears at the bottom of the screen and a glowing pink heart frames her looking around and pointing to herself, surprised that she has indeed been selected by the player. The screen then splits, transitioning to an illustrated depiction of Hazel in a cartoon style, smiling softly at the viewer, now with a mobile phone in hand. The name ‘Hazel Hadley’ appears in glowing text at the bottom of the screen with the subtitle “your adventure awaits”.
The screen splits one final time to a pink background showing a loading screen reading “new life, loading” and a buffering circle. The video fades to black.

Places please! 5, 6, 7, 8 - We are proud to present the shining star of the rehearsal space, theatre enthusiast, innuendo connoisseur and dating sim expert, Avery Cox played by Val Gladkova! Sure it’s true, dropping out of university for that big Broadway break hasn’t been the most fruitful endeavour so far, but observing the audition rooms with anthropological precision and watching numerous Fosse flicks daily, gives one a certain knowledge of the inner workings of seducers, flirts and heartbreakers, perfect for romancing every single datee in their favourite game “That’s the Spirit!” If Avery cannot mount the record charts with their debut west-end cast recording just yet, then there are other things they can virtually mount with expert precision.

Video Description:
The video shows a character selection screen in a mobile dating game. The character currently selected is ‘Avery’, a person with short blonde hair wearing a white and blue striped shirt with an orange bowtie, a long green skirt, polka dot socks and white trainers. While they wait for the player to select them, they shift from foot to foot. A speech bubble pops up in the bottom left of the screen reading “Don’t forget: four pheasants!” After a while, Avery’s idle animation begins and they gesticulate grandly as if reciting a monologue, before going back to swaying from foot to foot waiting.
The stats are as follows: +5 Theatre, +2 Datee Info, -3 Self-belief.
Once the player selects Avery, all text and illustrations fade away. A loading card appears at the bottom of the screen and a glowing pink heart frames Avery striking a confident pose with their hands on their hips, accompanied by a wide grin. The screen then splits, transitioning to an illustrated depiction of Avery in a cartoon style; they are seated with a game controller in their hands, now wearing brown trousers and a non-binary and trans pride pin on their shirt. The name ‘Avery Cox’ appears in glowing text at the bottom of the screen with the subtitle “your adventure awaits”.
The screen splits one final time to a pink background showing a loading screen reading “new life, loading” and a buffering circle. The video fades to black.

‘Sup lads, dudes, and bros, prepare your fist to be bumped and your palm met with the fresh, satisfying sting of a perfectly executed high five, because Oliver Branch, soz… Oli B, played by Jack Taki-Owen, is swaggering this way, the coolest guy in town. For what other testosterone-typical activity could outweigh the pursuit of cool? Cool is the best of the best. Cool is timeless. You can’t go wrong with cool. His best friends and fellow esports team members Avery and Hazel could never really understand, Avery would rather waste their time playing stupid dating sims; Oli lives, breathes, and sweats gaming technique, how else would their trio win any tournament?

Video Description:
The video shows a character selection screen in a mobile dating game. The character currently selected is ‘Oli’, a man with short brown hair wearing a black beanie hat, a long sleeved white and black shirt, black joggers and socks. While he waits for the player to select him, he goes through a series of movements, shifting from foot to foot like a boxer, he raises his fists to the viewer, before seeming uninterested and casually posing with a peace sign. A speech bubble pops up in the bottom left of the screen reading “Improve your Ladvocabulary” After a while, Oli’s idle animation begins and he cups his hands to his mouth performing several bird calls while animated birds fly across the screen (after which he looks embarrassed), before going back to swaying from foot to foot waiting.
The stats are as follows: +3 Lad Energy, +5 Bird Info and -4 Integrity.
Once the player selects Oli, all text and illustrations fade away. A loading card appears at the bottom of the screen and a glowing pink heart frames him striking a confident pose with his arms crossed. The screen then splits, transitioning to an illustrated depiction of Oli in a cartoon style, standing with a backpack strewn across his shoulder. The name ‘Oliver Branch’ appears in glowing text at the bottom of the screen with the subtitle “your adventure awaits”.
The screen splits one final time to a pink background showing a loading screen reading “new life, loading” and a buffering circle. The video fades to black.
