On International Women’s Day, I wanted to celebrate some of my favourite books by female authors. It’s hard to only choose seven but these ones have stayed with me. Jung Chang’s impactful book, Wild Swans, provides an extraordinary history of China through three generations. Rachel Joyce’s Miss Benson’s Beetle is a gentle and charming book. Home Going by Yaa Gyasi is an intelligent and illuminating read. I loved Pip Williams’ The Dictionary of lost Words - it was a fantastic summer read. Chimamanda Mgozi Adichie is a skilled storyteller weaving history with fiction seamlessly and no more so than in Purple Hibiscus. Andrea Levy’s Small Island gives a poignant but not always comfortable glimpse into post WWII Britain. And finally, Florence Knapp’s The Names is my most recent read. Open hearted and compelling, this was a book where I was totally invested in the characters and didn’t want to the book to end. What are your favourite books by female authors?

Looking forward to Sir Anthony Seldon’s visit to Books at the Barn on Thursday 26th February. He will be talking about his 1300km walk to Auschwitz but the book was so much more - seeking positive stories about people who stood up to the atrocities of WWII, commentary on today’s global politics, the importance of history and self-reflection. The talk starts at 7.30pm and tickets are available from www.booksatthebarn.co.uk

Are you in need of cheering up in January? Come and hear Times journalist at Books at the Barn on Jan 15th. Her new book, THE YEAR OF THE DOG, is a wildly funny memoir of life and love in your thirties – complete with heartbreak, bad dates, baby fever and one very naughty puppy. There is a rumour that Dennis, the very naughty puppy in question, will be accompanying Sophia.

Another sold out evening with .graham.dixon at the last week. He wowed us with his spellbinding lecture on Vermeer, to promote his new book Vermeer: A Life Lost and Found. You could have heard a pin drop, even Charlie the dog was captivated. It was especially lovely to have Andrew’s editor Eleo Gordon in the audience too. A wonderful end to the year. Thank you Andrew and thank you to ******erhs for selling books at all our barn events this year. We’re busy planning 2026. Watch this space!
