As promised a few days ago, here is the work made by the Youth Ambassador group during my project making the community made tile mural ‘Community Chronicles’ I’d like to say they are so amazing because of my teaching skills but in reality they all had a natural affinity with ceramics!

Working with the Youth Ambassadors has been a real highlight for me, with the support of we were able to research the meanings and symbolism of the motifs at the Old Hall in more detail. We created replica ceramic vessels using coil building, and looked at capturing the textural surface of the Hall by creating wax rubbings, and then silicone moulds which we used to imprint into tiles for the murals. Of course each participant also created a tile inspired by what the Hall means to them. The young people are incredible and it was very inspiring to work with them on this project, it was wonderful to see them present their work at the Symposium event held last month. I will share their ceramics seperately x

Had a wonderful evening at at the New beginnings Symposium, it was wonderful hearing all about the 18 month project including hearing about Oral Histories, Volunteers, Horticulture, the archeological dig and their work with the East Midlands Young Writers group and Youth Ambassadors. All alongside the backdrop of the Community Chronicles artworks. I feel very privileged to have been a part of the story.

Here is a closer look at all 144 of the wonderful ceramic tiles that make up the installation each one made by a member of the community including children from the local Parish Primary school, visitors, children from East Midlands Young Writers group, the Youth Ambassadors, not to mention staff, volunteers and members of the Friends of the Old Hall. Which is your favourite?

Thank you everyone who came to the open day and artwork launch today, and to everyone who made a tile, shared their memories and contributed to the rich tapestry of tiles that make up the tryptic. Individually they are incredible, each one tells a unique story and collectively they chronicle the many different uses, time periods, and roles that Gainsborough Old Hall has had, they look very striking in their new home at the Old Hall don’t you think?🏡

Working with the staff and volunteers at Gainsborough Old Hall has felt like a real collaboration of energy and passion, they are so welcoming, so knowledgeable and so enthusiastic about the Hall, and they made me feel like one of the team from day one. Friendships have been made here that will last a lifetime. Thank you so much 🙏🏻 and an extra shout out to who has been my workshop buddy for every one, I am grateful for your drive, positivity and support.

Doing the tours with has been one of my favourite part of my time at Gainsborough Old Hall. Did you know Henry VIII stayed at twice? The second time apparently Catherine Howard cheating on him? Also did you know Catherine Parr lived here prior to being his 6th wife? It’s not just gossip and scandal though, real people lived and worked here, if I was alive back then I would definitely be downstairs not upstairs. Maybe this is why I find myself drawn to the stories of the people who worked here, the unnamed maids, cooks, bakers, stewards, cleaners, dressers, launderers, I think about the places in the Hall they lived, what they ate, were they happy, what is their story? If walls could talk it is their story I would love to hear their story.
