Meet the wolverine (no, not Hugh Jackman), nature's shaggy little powerhouse!
Don't let that stocky, bear-like build and fierce reputation fool you, this chunky character is actually the largest land-dwelling member of the Mustelid family (the weasel family), making cousins like badgers, stoats and your average garden weasel look rather modest by comparison.
A big male tips the scales at 20-25 kg and stretches 70-105 cm long, plus an 18-26 cm bushy tail for good measure. That's roughly badger-sized by weight, but where a badger is built low and round, the wolverine is all dense muscle and attitude.
Put it next to the rest of the family and the size gap gets silly: a wolverine outweighs a pine marten 15-20 times over, dwarfs a stoat by about 100 times, and could flatten a least weasel (a mere 30-250g) without even trying. Only its semi-aquatic cousins, the sea otter (up to 45 kg) or the giant otter (up to 1.8 m nose to tail), beat it for size across the whole mustelid family, which is exactly why wolverines earn the title specifically on land.
Pound for pound, a wolverine is basically a mini-bear squeezed into a weasel's body, tough enough to stand its ground against wolves, and even bears, over a carcass. Not bad for something technically in the weasel family!
