Part 2 of Tonni's story

Following Brexit, the rules on us being allowed to transport wild turtles outside of the UK changed, which caused some difficulties for us trying to release Tonni. Like we mentioned in our last post, loggerheads are not as rare as the other species we've had, and there just happened to be five other loggerheads at Blue Reef aquarium Cornwall who also needed to be repatriated. So in the end, the Royal Navy collected them all, and released them off the coast of the Azores while the HMS Medway was on the way to the Caribbean for deployment.

Rhan 2 o stori Tonni

Yn dilyn Brexit, newidiodd y rheolau arnom ni’n cael caniatâd i gludo crwbanod gwyllt y tu allan i’r DU, a achosodd rai anawsterau i ni wrth geisio rhyddhau Tonni. Fel y soniasom yn ein postiad diwethaf, nid yw’r pennau mor brin â’r rhywogaethau eraill sydd gennym ni, ac roedd pump o bennau eraill yn acwariwm Blue Reef yng Nghernyw hefyd oedd angen eu hailwladoli. Felly yn y diwedd, casglodd y Llynges Frenhinol nhw i gyd, a’u rhyddhau oddi ar arfordir yr Azores tra roedd yr HMS Medway ar ei ffordd i’r Caribî i’w defnyddio.

Happy turtle week! Our most recent turtle, Rhossi, was found on traeth Llydan in Rhosneigr by dog walkers who informed the coastguard, who then contacted us. Rhossi is another Kemp's Ridley turtle, so luckily the team knew what they were doing this time around. However, once it came to preparing for Rhossi's repatriation, we hit a wall again, and this time not to-do with the EU, but the U.S. government. Find out in tomorrow's post how Donald Trump's decision to defund wildlife conservation in the U.S. has effected our efforts to return Rhossi home!

Wythnos crwbanod hapus! Cafwyd hyd i'n crwban diweddaraf, Rhossi, ar Draeth Llydan yn Rhosneigr gan gerddwyr cŵn a hysbysodd y gwylwyr arfordir, a gysylltodd â ni wedyn. Mae Rhossi yn grwban Kemp's Ridley arall, felly'n ffodus roedd y tîm yn gwybod beth roedden nhw'n ei wneud y tro hwn. Fodd bynnag, unwaith y daeth hi'n amser paratoi ar gyfer dychwelyd Rhossi i'w wladwlad, fe wnaethon ni daro wal eto, a'r tro hwn nid oedd yn ymwneud â'r UE, ond â llywodraeth yr Unol Daleithiau. Darganfyddwch ym mhost yfory sut mae penderfyniad Donald Trump i ddad-ariannu cadwraeth bywyd gwyllt yn yr Unol Daleithiau wedi effeithio ar ein hymdrechion i ddychwelyd Rhossi adref!

How is everyone enjoying hearing the stories of our turtle rescues? Our third turtle, Tonni, was found on Moel Y Don beach - again, just down the road from the Sea Zoo - in January 2023 while we were still rehabilitating Tally, so now we had two turtles to look after! Tonni was a loggerhead, slightly more common to get washed up in the UK as they are found in the Mediterranean. Tonni was a tiny little thing when she was brought in to us - less than 25cm across the top of her shell - but after a year and a half of brilliant care and free food she was almost fully grown.

Sut mae pawb yn mwynhau clywed straeon ein hachubiadau o grwbanod? Cafwyd hyd i'n trydydd crwban, Tonni, ar draeth Moel Y Don - unwaith eto, ychydig i lawr y ffordd o'r Sŵ Môr - ym mis Ionawr 2023 tra roedden ni'n dal i adfer Tally, felly nawr roedd gennym ni ddau grwban i ofalu amdanyn nhw! Roedd Tonni yn grwban penboeth, ychydig yn fwy cyffredin i gael ei golchi i fyny yn y DU gan eu bod nhw i'w cael ym Môr y Canoldir. Roedd Tonni yn beth bach iawn pan ddaethpwyd â hi atom ni - llai na 25cm ar draws top ei chragen - ond ar ôl blwyddyn a hanner o ofal gwych a bwyd am ddim roedd hi bron wedi tyfu'n llawn.

Part 2 of Tally's story
After spending almost two years getting Tally ready for repatriation and figuring out how to get her back to the Gulf of Mexico, she was flown from Anglesey to Heathrow by a volunteer pilot, then put in the cargo hold of a British Airways flight from Heathrow to Houston, and finally we worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to release her back into the wild in Texas.

Rhan 2 o stori Tally
Ar ôl treulio bron i ddwy flynedd yn paratoi Tally i'w dychwelyd a darganfod sut i'w chael hi'n ôl i Gwlff Mecsico, cafodd ei hedfan o Ynys Môn i Heathrow gan beilot gwirfoddol, yna ei rhoi yn nal cargo awyren British Airways o Heathrow i Houston, ac yn olaf fe wnaethon ni weithio gyda sefydliad wedi'i leoli yn Texas i'w rhyddhau hi yn ôl i'r gwyllt.

Happy sea turtle week! Next up was Tally, found on Talacre beach near Prestatyn in November 2021. After the surprise of rescuing the UK's first Olive Ridley turtle in 2016, we couldn't believe it when we realised Tally was a Kemp's Ridley turtle - another rare species who was supposed to be in the Gulf of Mexico! As a juvenile who wasn't big enough to fight against strong currents, Tally was probably pushed into the Gulf stream by a large storm and carried to the Celtic sea.

Wythnos crwban môr hapus! Nesaf oedd Tally, a ddarganfuwyd ar draeth Talacre ger Prestatyn ym mis Tachwedd 2021. Ar ôl syndod achub crwban Olive Ridley cyntaf y DU yn 2016, allwn ni ddim credu pan sylweddolon ni mai crwban Kemp's Ridley oedd Tally - rhywogaeth brin arall a oedd i fod i fod yng Ngwlff Mecsico! Fel crwban ifanc nad oedd yn ddigon mawr i ymladd yn erbyn ceryntau cryf, mae'n debyg i Tally gael ei gwthio i lif y Gwlff gan storm fawr a'i chario i'r Môr Celtaidd.

Happy sea turtle week! We hope everyone enjoyed our post on the beginning of Menai's story yesterday. Time for part 2!

After we took Menai in we quickly realised she had some buoyancy issues which kept her floating at the top of her tank. She wasn't able to dive down for long periods, and that would seriously effect her ability to feed in the wild! So, to solve this, the team tried putting some weights around her shell (remember, Menai was our first turtle and we were experimenting here) but it worked, and Menai's buoyancy issues were resolved! After her rehabilitation here, she was transported to a rehab centre in Gran Canaria for phase two of treatment. Unfortunately, this is when some more underlying health issues became apparent, and Menai wasn't able to recover.

Working with Menai was an amazing experience for the Sea Zoo team and helped prepare us for what was to come later! Stay tuned for the story of our second turtle, Tally, tomorrow!

Wythnos crwbanod môr hapus! Gobeithio bod pawb wedi mwynhau ein post ar ddechrau stori Menai ddoe. Amser ar gyfer rhan 2!

Ar ôl i ni gymryd Menai i mewn, fe sylweddolon ni'n gyflym fod ganddi rai problemau arnofio a oedd yn ei chadw'n arnofio ar ben ei thanc. Nid oedd hi'n gallu plymio i lawr am gyfnodau hir, a byddai hynny'n effeithio'n ddifrifol ar ei gallu i fwydo yn y gwyllt! Felly, i ddatrys hyn, ceisiodd y tîm roi rhywfaint o bwysau o amgylch ei chragen (cofiwch mai Menai oedd ein crwban cyntaf ac roedden ni'n arbrofi yma) ond fe weithiodd, a chafodd problemau arnofio Menai eu datrys! Ar ôl ei hadsefydlu yma, cafodd ei chludo i ganolfan adsefydlu yn Gran Canaria ar gyfer cam dau o'r driniaeth. Yn anffodus, dyma pryd y daeth rhai problemau iechyd sylfaenol mwy yn amlwg, ac nid oedd Menai'n gallu gwella.

Roedd gweithio gyda Menai yn brofiad anhygoel i dîm Sŵ'r Môr a helpodd i baratoi ni ar gyfer yr hyn oedd i ddod yn ddiweddarach! Arhoswch i weld stori ein hail grwban, Tally, yfory!

Crwban lwcus! Menai was, and still is, the only Olive Ridley turtle ever recorded in the UK!

Stay tuned this week for more stories of our turtle rescues!

Wythnos crwbanod môr hapus! Yr wythnos hon byddwn yn eich atgoffa chi i gyd am ein crwbanod a achubwyd, ac rydym yn dechrau gyda chyfle i gofio Tachwedd 2016 pan olchwyd ein crwban cyntaf erioed, o'r enw Menai, i fyny ar ddiwedd ein dreif! Crwban lwcus! Menai oedd, ac mae o hyd, yr unig grwban Olive Ridley a gofnodwyd erioed yn y DU!

Cadwch lygad allan yr wythnos hon am fwy o straeon am ein hachubiadau crwbanod!
