Thanks to Buxton Fringe for this photo of our wonderful star guests from last night’s concert!

And see below our wonderful review!

There is nothing like going out with a bang and Curtain Up! offered the perfect end to this year’s amazing Fringe with a huge crowd assembling at the Palace Hotel Ballroom for a two-hour extravaganza featuring Peak Voices Choir hosted by local celebrity Edwina Currie and with guest performances from West End and The Voice star Matthew Croke and singer-songwriter Sophie-Grace whose CV includes having entertained 70,000 people as part of Adele’s concert in Munich.

In a well-structured evening, the choir gave us its all, displaying great diction and impressive vocal range as it tackled favourites including Funiculì, Funiculà, Queen’s A Kind of Magic, Frank Sinatra’s Somethin’ Stupid, Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water, a lovely arrangement of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and many more. Meanwhile Matthew, who is best known for playing the title role in Aladdin in the West End, allowed his voice to soar as he poured his heart into Tomorrow, from the musical Annie, confessing in his intro that: “There are a lot more nos than yeses in my industry but I always tell myself there’s tomorrow…” His other numbers included Sandy from Grease - requiring a Sandy from the audience of course - and Any Dream Will Do from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - necessitating even more singing from the willing audience. Plus we also got to hear A Whole New World from Aladdin itself.

The presence of Sophie-Grace was an unexpected bonus as she performed soulfully and powerfully nailing covers such as Candi Staton’s Young Hearts Run Free and Adele’s Make You Feel My Love.

Throughout this starry evening (with appropriately twinkly lights behind the colourfully attired choir), the presence of Edwina Currie was far from token. She made regular introductions, showed real interest in the singers and ensured we got to hear from the choir’s musical director Chris Blackshaw and piano accompanist Rosemary Dobin. She also reminded us that singing was excellent for our health and wellbeing: “If you think you need a boost you need to join a choir!”

Peak Voices Choir meets every Monday from 7-9pm at the United Reformed Church, Buxton. Why not give it a go?
