During lockdown, Rob Rouse had six chickens in his back garden. With no live sport anywhere, he started racing them at 5pm every day — timed against the COVID figures on the news.

TalkSport called and asked for the broadcasting rights. He ran them a hard deal. Before long, legendary horse racing commentator Rupert Bell was calling the runners and riders on national radio every Saturday morning.

Goldie was the fastest chicken that ever lived. Janet McFeathers never won a race — but she did eat a mouse live on TalkSport. Bob was the non-binary chicken. Plus: The boss.

They held their own against the resurgence of the Premier League for as long as they could.

This is that story. 🐔

🍺 Pub: Crookes Social Club — warm, welcoming, Alpacalypse on tap. Go for a drink, see what's on, you'll be friends for life.
🍽️ Food: NO NAME Sheffield — BYO, bespoke menu, feels like dinner in someone's front room. Book well in advance.
🛍️ Shop: Atkinsons Department Store on The Moor — survived the Blitz, survived Meadowhall. "You could shoot a remake of Michael Mann's Heat in the car park." Don't miss the animatronic Christmas displays.
❤️ Favourite thing: Talking to people. Just open yourself up to it.
💎 Hidden gem: Hidden Gem at Work Ltd Cafe, off Ringinglow Road — charity-run, locally sourced, incredible shakshuka. Never skip the specials.

What an amazing show we had at Crookes Social Club on Tuesday with the exquisite Joe Lycett and brilliant support from Josh Sedman - we were stuffed to the gunnels with the most amazing audience.

I’m just working through some some amazing photos from our brilliant photographer Karina Lax, but could t resist popping this lovely family Polaroid up!

it’s been such a joy watching that gig grow over the last few years in a social club that is so brilliantly connected to the local community with an astonishingly varied number of events catering for everyone.

It’s a very happy place! We’re back there with our next show in just 2 weeks with the incredible Matt Richardson & the sublime Tom Ward - all shows hosted by Rob Rouse
