Oh hi, welcome to my page! 👋🏼 I’m Suzy, founder of Melodies & Memories, and I deliver interactive singing & movement sessions for residents in care & residential homes, and adults with additional needs 🎶

If you’re looking for something a little bit different for your residents, I’m your gal! My sessions include group singalongs, chair-based exercises, reminiscence activities and trivia- so not just your average singing session 😊

I incorporate many props such as scarves, ribbons, instruments, and pom poms to help encourage movement, rhythm, and emotional expression through music 🪇

I’m a dementia friend, and hold insurance and a DBS.

My nanna was in a care home for many years and lived with vascular dementia, so I come with oodles of empathy, patience, kindness, and respect for each and every person I have the pleasure of singing and dancing with 🫶🏼 It also means I feel strangely at home in a care home! 🥰

MUSIC OF COURSE!🎶 I don’t know about you but having grown up in a house where music was played near enough every day, I can’t go a day without listening to it! And that’s not me being overdramatic, if you lived with me you’d find out for yourself 🤣

Did you know that singing along to music helps to reduce anxiety and depression, helps to express feelings and emotions, and enhances your quality of life?

So when you’re next cleaning the house, driving in the car, waking up in a morning ready for the day ahead, put some music on and sing along at the top of your lungs- I guarantee you it will bring some joy to your day and make you feel that little bit lighter 😌

The food at Citadela Budva was unreal 🤤 Stunning place and amazing service too- 10/10 👌🏼

Up, up, and away in the Kotor Cable Cars- absolutely stunning views but not for the faint hearted…. Had heart palpitations going up 😅

Kotor Old Town- I preferred Budva Old Town but it’s still definitely worth a visit ⛪️

Peaceful Perast- perfect if you want to escape the busier tourist hubs of Kotor and Budva. So calming and tranquil 🧘🏻‍♀️

Never thought this would be what I do for a living…. But I’m so glad it is!

When I was little and someone asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up, I used to say “perform on Broadway”. I didn’t quite get there, and I still have trauma from the disaster that was my Shakespeare monologue during my RADA audition (when I say the word ‘horrendous’ though 🫠).

I was lucky enough to do some professional singing for a few years and then qualify as a dance teacher. Little did I know that that would all lead me to shaking maracas in my own singing & movement sessions in care settings for the elderly, people living with dementia, and adults with additional learning.

Life doesn’t always turn out the way you thought it would, sometimes what you’re meant to do finds you without you looking for it 💫

Care setting activity coordinators, your to-do list seems to be never ending and your time extremely limited- I see you! 👋🏼

The last thing you need is to be searching for an activity provider who you can trust to bring a fun, energetic, interactive singing & movement session that your residents will really connect with. That’s me where I come in! 🙋🏻‍♀️

Easily the BEST thing about what I do 🫶🏼

Meet Bob- a wonderfully happy chap and an absolute gentleman. He loves a sing and dance, copies all the steps, and brings his playful and cheeky side to every one of our sessions. After this gorgeous moment, he said, “Thank you for the dance, kind lady” and bowed his head 🥹

It really is such a rewarding thing to meet all these fantastic members of the elderly community, and to see them living well and thriving in their care setting 💚

After going through my nanna living with vascular dementia and her being in a care home for several years, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what going into care homes to deliver singing & movement sessions would look like. Here are just a few things I’ve learnt along the way since launching Melodies & Memories….

🎶 It’s okay if a resident becomes emotional during a song. It’s cathartic for them to go through that emotion and be given a safe space to remember a precious moment/ time/ person that they may link that particular song to.

😑 It’s okay if some residents aren’t participating in, or don’t look like they’re enjoying, the session. I’ve had many residents not express a single smile or copied one step during the session, to the point where I’ve panicked internally and thought “Oh no, they’re not feeling this at all 😩”, but they always come up to me afterwards and say “I really enjoyed that!”. They may not always feel comfortable or confident attempting to copy steps or sing along to the lyrics of a song, but they are taking it all in and enjoying it their own way.

😴 It’s okay if a resident wants to have a little snooze during my sessions- I don’t take it personally! The exercise songs we did may have tired them out, they may not have had a good night’s sleep the night before, they may be feeling slightly under the weather, or they may just be a bit full from a delicious lunch! (We’ve all been there- give me a big bowl of pasta and I’m in a food coma for at least a good 2 hours afterwards 🥱)

🤬 It’s okay if a resident uses ‘choice’ language with me- there were all kinds of different characters in my nanna’s care home over the years, all living with different stages of dementia, and it’s nothing I haven’t heard before! Plus I may have just caught them on a day where they really REALLY don’t fancy waving a floaty scarf around, and that’s their prerogative to refuse said floaty scarf 😂

Each session is a chance to learn more, develop my skills, and most importantly to grow as a person. And I’m very grateful for that 😌
