📚✨ STORYBOOK ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP - THURSTON LIBRARY ✨📚

There is no mistaking the focal point of this piece! - This terrific otter looks as though it has just spotted us under the water and is curious to say hello!

This was an awesome piece by a student in the Thurston library World Book Day Workshop - an excellent use of foreground with the central placement of the character, middle ground with the seaweed and background with the water ripples hinted at with delicate paint stroke lines.

The positioning, expression and ex*****on of the pensive otter tells a story of a chance encounter between us and the otter in their natural environment - excellent work, five stars!

Students were asked to bring their favourite books along to the workshop - which was in celebration of world book day. They used these and the library books they were surrounded with as “Imagination Food” (inspiration) for the workshops and to help them to tell stories with their illustrations.

The workshop began with x2 exercises that taught them water-based paint, pencil and pen techniques to create characters and scenes before embarking on their individual projects. It was a truly magical workshop.

The students left the workshop feeling confident in their visual communication skills and with a sense of pride at the work they had accomplished.

📚✨ STORYBOOK ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP - THURSTON LIBRARY ✨📚

Students were asked to bring their favourite books along to the workshop - which was in celebration of world book day. They used these and the library books they were surrounded with as “Imagination Food” (inspiration) for the workshops and to help them to tell stories with their illustrations.

The workshop began with x2 exercises that taught them water-based paint, pencil and pen techniques to create characters and scenes before embarking on their individual projects. It was a truly magical workshop.

Here is an outcome from the “Faces” exercise that was created during the workshop:

- the students are asked to use the bright water-based paints to create blobs on the watercolour paper, testing out the results that different amounts of water create when applied to the pigment

- next we run through letters of the alphabet and talk about how illustrators use dots lines and shapes and letters to create expression

- we then discuss expressions, pulling faces themselves and study the alphabet to see similarities

- then we build our expressions with letters, dots and lines

- next we think about our characters hairstyle choices, jewellery, accessories

- we experiment with layering our blobs using colouring pencils to add texture and colour

- finally, we name our blobs to give them a sense of identity.

The students left the workshop feeling confident in their visual communication skills and with a sense of pride at the work they had accomplished.

📚✨ STORYBOOK ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP - THURSTON LIBRARY ✨📚

This piece was incredibly atmospheric and so striking:

- The cool blue tones contrast the low yellow sun which gives us a clear indication of the time of day in the picture.

- The use of line work to suggest foliage without having to draw in every single flower lets our imaginations work with the art to finish building the scene.

- The suggestions of the mountain using simple shapes and varying tones of the same blue also add to the light and time of day suggestion which supports the storytelling.

- The focus on having clear foreground, middle ground and background layers (the wolf in the background is smaller to show this) with the two characters placed perfectly either side of the centre line of the page to show balance.

- The use of curved lines to indicated the sound coming from the character helps to tell the story, two wolves in conversation!

These were all skills that this student was taught during the first half of the workshop and I am brimming with pride to see them all feature in the individual project section of the workshop.

Fantastic work, well done!

🐷🐻 IMAGINATION EDUCATION WORKSHOP OUTCOME 🐻🐷

In this part of the workshop I conducted as part of the blank page project for Gainsborough library, the students were asked to fetch their favourite book from the library and re illustrate scenes that meant something to them using their own unique style of illustration, the techniques taught in the workshop and their own one-of-a-kind imaginations.

Just by glancing at this students work you can tell exactly which famous characters they are portraying in their artwork. Choosing iconic scenes from A A Milne and E H Shepard’s Winnie The Pooh was simply wonderful. These illustrations bring a sense of comfort and joy.

The student used the silhouette technique of building form with simple shapes which translated beautifully to these iconic figures.

On this occasion I advised the student who was waiting for the artwork to dry before adding facial features and further details, to stop right there as they had created such charm and symbolism and the paintings were perfection as they were to me. They agreed with me and felt huge pride in their achievement and began painting more scenes in the same style.

🌅🦇🗻 STUDENT WORKSHOP OUTCOME 🗻🦇🌅

After learning illustration techniques to draw places, scenes and silhouettes, this student decided to depict a mountain range at sunset with her bat starring as the main character. The bat silhouette was built up of simple shapes from our step by step tutorial.

I think the use of colour in this piece is spectacular! The warm tones coming from the sunset really contrast the snowy weather beautifully.

The use of thick black lines make the mountains seem ginormous and ominous! The use of perspective is fantastic. In this workshop we talked a lot about foreground middle and background which is deployed wonderfully with this mountain range.

Incredible work from the Blank Page Project workshops I have recently hosted with

🏡 STUDENT WORKSHOP OUTCOME - THE STORYTELLING COTTAGE 🏡

I would love to live in this stunning cottage that a student painted during one of my Blank Page Project workshops!

The skills displayed here are exceptional! This student used the skills learnt in the workshop such as using shapes to create a 3D building. watercolour pants and how to blend the water based paints to make interesting blocks of colour.

I thoroughly enjoyed hosting workshops for during the incredible blank page project!

🏫 UNITY SCHOOLS PARTNERSHIP : ART FESTIVAL 🏫

Myself .stuteley and my business have just had the huge honour of being a part of Unity Schools Partnership’s 2026 Art Festival this year!

It was absolutely magnificent to be interviewed by Alex Bedford and to also feature in the live online assembly for the many schools that work with USP.

During which, I hosted an illustration tutorial of “How to draw a jellyfish” to demonstrate how by just using simple shapes and lines you can create your own character full of individual personality.

Above is the recording of the interview published to the schools alongside the assembly, of which I am thrilled to say I have permission to post online.

Over the course of the week following the assembly and the interview, I was privileged to be able to see the students outcomes and to have the opportunity to applaud their creativity and incredible artwork.

It was a fantastic art festival, and personally it was a real milestone moment for myself as an artist and terrific exposure for Imagination Education School Workshops. As a result I look forward to working with the schools in the future as a result of this opportunity.

Thank you Unity Schools Partnership for asking me to be a part of your art festival this year, it was an honour!

✨🐉✍🏻 IMAGINATION EDUCATION WORKSHOP OUTCOME ✍🏻🐉✨

This outcome was from the ‘Personal Project’ section of the workshop, where the students went on to create masterpieces that were inspired by their favourite stories in the library, using the techniques they were taught during the morning section of the workshop.

How glorious is this Dragon! The student used water based paints, watercolour paper, pencils, pen, inspiration and their own unique imagination to produce this stunning piece of work!

This workshop was one of three full day sessions I conducted as part of The Blank Page Project for Suffolk Libraries.

The participants were taught how to illustrate “Faces and Places” using a combination of watercolour, colouring pencils, silhouettes and their imaginations.

They then went on to create individual pieces based on their own unique personal briefs. The aim was to learn storytelling illustration skills, develop analogue creativity, explore their imaginations and enhance confidence in their artistic skill set in order to use art as a hobbey to support overall wellbeing.

The workshop was a huge success and the work was simply beautiful. The day went so fast and the outcomes were full of expression and character!
