Anna Joan's Art

Anna Joan's Art Suffolk artist from Bury St Edmunds selling bespoke, Suffolk wildlife original artworks and prints. My name is Anna Joan and I am based in Bury St.

Edmunds, Suffolk. I am an animal portrait artist who draws Suffolk wildlife, selling bespoke, original artworks and prints. As a native to this beautiful county, I have always had a deep connection to its unique, inspiring countryside and wildlife. It has long attracted artists and there are many wonderful local ones whose work I love, but I noticed there was a gap in the market that I believed my

artwork could fill. My portraiture seeks to be evocative, vivid depictions of the natural world around me. Although all retain traditional, realistic elements, in some I aim to add darker and more visceral expression and emotion. This has been specifically explored in "The Gaze" and "Bloodlust", artwork from The Dark Collection. The Light Collection consists of more traditional wildlife portraiture for those who love the natural appearance and expression Suffolk's beautiful animals have to offer.

Pet portrait of Sara, a Lionhead buck, and Mona, a Dutch doe.
Completed on A4 Bristol Board paper using coloured pencils.

This was my first pet portrait this autumn, and my first pet portrait of rabbits! Sadly, Mona passed earlier this year. Most of my portraits are of pets who have passed on, and it’s always a privilege to be entrusted with honouring their memory.

In case you didn’t already know, I am currently available for A4 pet portrait commissions while I complete my studies. All info is on my website. See bio ☺️

My first post in many months. Here is my newest original, “Mountain Hare”.

I love this one. I have been wanting to broaden my ‘hare horizons’ from the European brown hare to the ethereal Scottish mountain hares, and here I present my first depiction.

This portrait travels beyond the border of Suffolk, all the way up to the Scottish Highlands. The artwork is an experimentation of texture and light, featuring a sharp edged depiction of this stunning creature with both warm and cold hues. Natural light allows the portrait to come to life; the cold, blue hues of the snowy landscape reflected onto the hare’s face dominates the portrait, but the warmth of the sun pierces the eye, revealing its fiery glow.

Deep within the Scottish Highlands, these creatures face the ever-pressure of climate change affecting their eco-system and ability to blend into their surroundings, and have now been flagged onto the GB Red List as Near Endangered.

1/4 complete! Now working on lovely Lulu.

Unfortunately, I was hit with the flu and for the past week have been dead to the world 😷, which meant Lulu, who I’d hoped to have nearly finished by now, is only just now being worked on. ✍️✏️

I had a wonderful time trading at Presents Galore this weekend. I won my place at this Christmas market during the NYTM competition in the summer and it was my most successful market yet! It was also wonderful to trade with my fellow East of England finalists.

I am so pleased that my art had an impact on so many of you. Thank you to everyone who expressed a keen interest in booking commissions, and to those of you who in fact did book at the stall with a deposit. I am looking forward to working with all of you.

Thank you for having me!

I had a wonderful time trading at the YTM National Final in Stratford-upon-Avon last weekend ✨

While it was a little wet, it was a fantastic experience. I met some really wonderful people, which is always the highlight of these markets. I appreciate every one of you who came and bought one of my products, those of you who came for a chat, and those who voted for me. 💜

I also had my dad helping me on this market and unsurprisingly he was brilliant! Thank you !

And of course, well done to the winners of the competition and every trader involved. The competition was incredibly high and it was a privilege to trade with so many professionals ⭐️

I am currently on holiday now for a week in the lovely south of France! 🇫🇷 🍷 tbh a well deserved break imo 😂

I still remember playing in the woods with them as a child. Cuddling them, walking them, talking to them. Max (left) was with me from when I was 3 years old, and Alfie (right) joined the family when I was 9.

Max passed away when I was 12, and Alfie when I was 20.
Both were with me during pivotal stages of my early life and I will remember them in my heart forever.

This portrait has been completed as a birthday gift for my dad, who dearly loved them also.

Completed at A2 using coloured pencil on Bristol board paper. ✍️

Commissions are open and there are still spaces for 2024 ✨

My dear Alfie, who passed away in 2019, is coming along nicely next to Max.

Only thing is, the easy part is over…. Now it’s time for his lustrous, but untamed, fur which covers more than 3/4 of him! 😭✍️✍️

Half way through my biggest dual portrait yet.

Meet Max. You may have seen him before…
This one, however, is now the third version of him, one I believe is definitely the best so far. Perhaps it’ll become a tradition that every year I draw a new portrait of him to show the visible improvement.

Next to be drawn beside him is my beloved Alfie, which will in fact be a second version!

These two boys were together for 4 years, until Max passed away in 2012. He taught Alfie how to be a loyal, patient, wonderful dog, and so Alfie became just like Max. Alfie then lives many more years as our beloved dog and passed away in 2019.

Looking forward to finishing! I’m case you didn’t know, commissions are indeed open!

This portrait has been drawn to A2 (42 x 59.4 cm) using only coloured pencils on white Bristol board paper.
