It’s rare that I use this account for non-musical purposes, but BBC News - we need to have a flippin’ word.

Having spent my teenage years avoiding the knuckleduster queer-bashings that were commonplace in 1990s Bury St Edmunds, a Pride flag in 2026 tells me I’m safe and welcome. Older members of the community who’ve grown cynical about Pride need to look at the rise of undisguised fascism happening in our country right now, with transphobic and anti-immigrant rhetoric creating an easy, dehumanising “Us and Them” dichotomy, and remember how vulnerable our hard-won liberties are. The sharp, horrifying undermining of Trans rights are a stark object lesson in why Pride remains vital. Cynicism and complacency only make us all more vulnerable.

News articles like this suggest that there is a “fair balance” to be bridged between those who want to just go about living our lives peacefully with dignity and autonomy, and those who want to see us pushed to the sidelines, stripped of our rights and wiped off the face of the Earth. This is not the case. We exist and our existence is not a debate. Also, just to be absolutely clear: there is no such thing as “gender critical”. The correct terms are “transphobic”, “bigoted”, “hateful” and/or “fascist”.

The BBC is an incredible organisation that needs protecting from fascists who see it as a threat to be dismantled - so why would they seek to normalise the abhorrent rhetoric of those who would destroy them, along with everyone and everything else that doesn’t fit into their vision of an exclusively straight, white nation populated only by those who meet a narrow definition of Britishness?

We need to stand together. We need to demand that our public representatives and publicly-owned organisations to do more to combat bigotry and hate. We need to stop normalising the views of those who want us to die.

✨ ROOMSFEST 2026 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ✨

We are over the moon to welcome SEYMOUR QUIGLEY to the party for the annual RoomsFest festival! SEYMOUR QUIGLEY was born in Yorkshire to an Irish family, grew up in Suffolk and plays guitar whilst singing, but - thanks to a cunning blend of black hair dye and not being an unfeasibly successful global pop sensation - that's all he has in common with Ed Sheeran. Due to songs by his current band Rats As Big As Dogs proving totally unsuitable for acoustic reinterpretations, he'll be using this rare live solo outing to dust off old non-hits by his bands Miss Black America, Ten City Nation and Horse Party, plus some new songs he has no other use for.

Come and join us on Saturday 26th September from Midday to support and raise funds for your local friendly music venues.

This isn't just another music festival, it's a community coming together to support the places where so many local bands begin their journey.

100% of proceeds raised during this event will go towards helping to maintain and improve The Rehearsal Rooms, ensuring local musicians have an affordable place to rehearse for years to come. We're also celebrating and raising awareness of the reopening of Hunter Club Arts Centre, one the town’s most valuable community assets and grassroots music venues, following its refurbishment.
