The first Burnley Side Quest Society board game evening at Burnley Mechanics Theatre was a great success - Congratulations to Culture Maker Grace Blizzard and Tierney Smith - not only for doing a fantastic job of organising, but also learning all of the rules to help us all! My new favourite game is definitely Flip 7.
With 70 games donated and a bring and buy option to trade games, its a great way to try out everything from traditional board games, to adventure, family friendly and party games. Follow on Facebook for details of future dates.
Thanks Grace, Tierney, Paul, Fiona, Holly, Dom and Charly for a fun evening!

Burnley was built by people who made things with their hands.

Weavers. Engineers. Bakers. Builders. People who looked at raw material and saw something that wasn't there yet. That spirit didn't go anywhere. It's still here. We just need to find it.

You're already the one who sorts everything out, aren't you?!

The school run logistics. The family get-togethers. The group chat that actually gets a response because you're in it. You know your neighbours. You know your street. You know who needs a knock on the door and who'll bring the biscuits.

We're looking for people like you.

Burnley Culture Makers Organisers help plan and run cultural events in their local area as part of Burnley 2027 Year of Culture. We'll train you, cover all your expenses, and back you every step of the way. You just need to show up and be yourself.

Do you remember when this town knew how to put a do on?

The galas. The carnivals. The street parties organised by communities and community leaders. Somebody always made it happen. Somebody always knew who to ring, what needed doing, and how to get thirty people in the same place at the same time.

That person is a Culture Maker Organiser.

We're recruiting volunteers to help plan and deliver neighbourhood cultural events across Burnley and Padiham as part of Burnley 2027 Year of Culture. The Organiser role is for people who are reliable, connected and good at making things happen. Full training provided. All expenses covered. No experience needed, just the kind of life experience and knowhow you can't teach. ;-)

10/09/2026

To the Ends of the Earth: Antarctic Exploration with Julian Evans, grandson of Lt Teddy Evans - leader of the Terra Nova expedition following the death of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Using original photography of the expedition 1910-1913.

We're excited to announce an additional event which will take place as part of Heritage Open Days at Burnley Mechanics Theatre on 20 September at 2pm.

In 1904, Burnley Mechanics Institute hosted Lieutenant Armitage second in command of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery Expedition to Antarctica 1901-1904. More than 120 years later, Julian Evans returns to the Mechanics with a fascinating insight into the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration and its legacy today.

The talk will feature a special Magic Lantern Show, using an electric lantern similar to the one used by Lt Armitage in 1904, alongside original glass slides by Herbert Ponting, photographer on the later Terra Nova Expedition of 1910–1913.

Julian will explore the story of the Discovery Expedition, the Terra Nova Expedition and his grandfather's role following the loss of Scott and his team who died on the return journey from the pole. He will also share photographs and video from his own journey to Cape Evans, Antarctica, in 2013, undertaken to commemorate the centenary of the expedition.

The talk will also consider Antarctica today, including its changing environment and the impact of global warming.
