Counter Culture Burnley

Counter Culture Burnley Counter Culture is Burnley’s new cultural programme, celebrating the town’s historic high street area around Lower St James.

Our Consortium of independent cultural organisations are working with Burnley Borough Council to complement the High Street Heritage Action Zone programme, and bring a new buzz to this long neglected but very special area. Over three years we will be setting the scene for Lower St James to emerge as a vibrant new cultural quarter for Burnley. Watch out for street events, pop-up exhibitions and, of course, plenty of the unexpected! Follow this page to keep in touch with latest news.

Symposium of Optimism

This is a free to attend event - a conversation between artists and professionals, who want to explore how socially engaged arts practice remains optimistic and relevant in 2024.

Join us in a relaxed environment to discuss:

What could Socially Engaged Practice look like in 2024?

Who’s it for? Where does the artist end and a community begin?

What skill set should an artist bring? ...and what shouldn't they bring?

Where’s the value - and how do we measuring the benefit?

Good Practice / Bad practice.

How to maintain optimism, ambition and action when things are 'challenging'

Strategies and approaches.

Your hosts for the afternoon:

Jai Redman - Artist and Director of the Salon, Burnley

Gavin Parry - Photographer and social provocateur

Mimi Dearing - Artist 'Get It Done'

Bryn Phillips - Community organiser and strategist.

Thursday 30th November 13.00 - 16.00
The Salon, 160 St James Street, Burnley
