We Will Rock You was never a musical I would have chosen to see, but Birmingham's BMOS Musical Theatre Company have completely changed my mind – I would definitely go and watch this again!
From the moment the curtain went up, everything came together to create a truly fantastic production. The cast, set, musicians, props, costumes, choreography and sound were all outstanding, combining to deliver an almost perfect show.
A special mention has to go to the creative use of the video screen throughout the production. The visuals were incredibly effective, helping to bring the futuristic world of Globalsoft to life and adding another layer to the storytelling. Cleverly integrated into the action, the projections enhanced the atmosphere, provided seamless scene transitions and added real impact to key moments. It was a smart and imaginative touch that elevated the overall experience and made the production feel even more polished and professional.
Set in a future where individuality is banned and music is controlled by Globalsoft, rock music has become a thing of the past. Two unlikely heroes, Galileo and Scaramouche, team up to take on the ruthless Killer Queen and rediscover the power of rock. It’s an easy storyline to follow, packed with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments along the way.
BMOS have some incredibly talented performers who genuinely wouldn’t look out of place on a West End stage or as part of the professional touring production. Dan Smith and Charlotte Jarvis have fantastic on-stage chemistry, bouncing off each other effortlessly throughout the show. Charlotte’s vocals were one of the standout highlights of the evening – powerful, flawless and simply breathtaking.
Robbie Love was perfectly cast as Khashoggi. He was the ultimate villain that audiences love to hate, bringing confidence, menace and plenty of personality to the role. Every time he stepped onto the stage, he commanded attention, delivering a performance that was both entertaining and memorable. It’s hard to imagine anyone playing the role better.
For me, though, the standout performance had to be Heaven Okah as Oz. Her stage presence is electric, her energy infectious, and her vocals absolutely sensational. She has one of those voices that immediately grabs your attention and leaves you wanting more. Every scene she appeared in was elevated by her talent, and she truly shone from start to finish.
One of the things I really enjoyed was the audience participation throughout the show. It added to the fun atmosphere and made everyone feel part of the action. The energy in the theatre was incredible, especially as the audience became more involved as the show went on.
The entire company should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved. The energy, talent and passion radiating from the stage made this a joy to watch, and the audience clearly loved every minute of it. This was reflected at the end of the performance when the cast received a well-deserved standing ovation. Seeing the audience rise to their feet was a fitting tribute to an exceptional production and a testament to the hard work and talent of everyone involved.
We Will Rock You is playing The Alexandra until Saturday, and if you haven’t got your tickets yet, what are you waiting for? Grab them while you still can – this is a production you do not want to miss!
A champion production worthy of its Queen soundtrack – don't stop me now, I'm giving this five stars!
