Our next Film Club event will be at the Arts House Cafe on Stokes Croft, Monday, October 10th. Doors open at 6pm. In conjunction with Truthout Cinema we'll be screening The Occupation of the American Mind which provides a fascinating account of the propaganda battle that Israel has been waging for decades in order to persuade US citizens that Israel's continuing oppression of Palestine is necessary in order to maintain security. The film will be followed by a discussion of the issues that are raised. Hope to see you there!

The Film Club committee went to see the new documentary about Ken Loach yesterday then attended the Q&A afterwards. What an amazing director! Still principled and passionate about the issues that concern him and an inspiration to all who heard him speak. The doc is fascinating too - many facts about his early life, interest in the theatre (which led to his becoming involved in film-making) and the hardship endured when no one would fund his films to his current status as the best exponent of British social realism on film. And he was still modest and generous enough to come and talk to Wild Goose Film Club several years ago as some of you will remember....hats off to the man!

Our next Film Club event is scheduled for Sunday, May 15th at 7.15pm. It's called Fear Eats the Soul (1974) by Fassbinder and is the story of an older German woman who embarks on a relationship with a much younger Moroccan immigrant, to the surprise and shock of her family, friends and colleagues. It explores issues around bigotry and prejudice and seems like a topical choice for nowadays, given the tragic scenes we've witnessed in Greece, Calais and elsewhere as people try to make a new life for themselves in Europe.

Apologies but we've decided to postpone our next event until May. Details will be sent to you all about 2 weeks beforehand. In the meantime, check out this website which is great fun for those of you who like to make connections between apparently disparate films: http://thenextpictureshow.tumblr.com/

Where Movie Of The Week meets a movie of the day.

Just to let you know we will be organising an event for Sunday April 17th at Wild Goose Space. Details to follow very shortly...

Seen a couple of things these last few weeks which were all enjoyable in different ways: Spotlight, Hitchcock Truffaut, The Witch and Hail, Caesar. Anyone seen any of these as well? If so, what were your impressions?

For those of you new to Film Club - there are no tickets for events but we ask for a donation of £2 each that goes towards the hire of the room, DVD and a glass of wine or juice (with refills a modest £1 a glass). Exceptionally good value I'm sure you'd agree!

Breaking news - our film on Sunday will be My Life as a Dog since it was the most popular choice with a grand total of 7 votes. Hope to still see all of you who expressed interest in this event even if your film wasn't the winning one!

I saw 3 films on the plane on Sunday - Steve Jobs, The Program (about the Lance Armstrong doping scandal) and Macbeth. Seeing them back to back brought to mind an article I'd read in the morning about the New Feminist Cinema and calling on directors to offer a "counterbalance to the ever-boring narrative of the biopic about a white guy who did something....". Those films certainly tick that box - even Macbeth!

Check your emails for a brief synopsis about each of the films listed for a possible screening on February 28th....
