The Parish Players

The Parish Players The Parish Players is the local amateur dramatic group for Olveston and Tockington in South Gloucestershire, UK. Contact us for more information

We perform a musical production in February each year, rehearsing through the winter months. The Parish Players was formed in Olveston in 1980, by a group led by Jean Webster, as a development from a very active and successful drama group within Olveston and Tockington WI, which can trace its origins to the 1960s. The first production was on 26th February 1981 for three nights with an Olde Tyme Mu

sical Hall. Any profits went to Parish Hall and Meeting Point funds. Tickets cost £1.00 for adults and 50p for children. The programme was 5p. The show had a cast of 18, with four guest artistes. The producer was Jean Webster, choreographer Francine Cavin, pianist Mary Hosey. Jean proceeded to direct a string of popular home-grown musical-comedies with titles which included ‘Happy Days’, ‘Showtime’ and ‘Dancing Queen’ – all staged at the Parish Hall. Jean was supported by a company of players made up of local personalities such as Freddy and Carmen Pitts. After Jean’s death, Penny Bush became director and continued the formula for several years until 1997 when she moved away and the players went into a short hibernation. In 2000, Beryl Keay, a founder member of The Parish Players, wrote a millennium play, which traced the history of the parish since Roman times, and Linda Evans was asked to direct it. This rekindled enthusiasm and resulted in The Parish Players reforming. The Parish Players then continued to present many of the great musicals, including a range of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operas, under Linda’s expert direction, until she stepped down in 2023. The group benefited hugely from Linda's long-running creative partnership with Musical Director Chloe Allsopp-Jones. Heather Collins then took on the role of Director from Linda, again working alongside Chloe. She first directed our very successful production of Brigadoon in 2024. We are fortunate to stage our shows at the Parish Hall, which provides such a warm and intimate atmosphere. Long may it continue. The Early Years

My Fair Lady is one of the most well known and loved of all musicals, with its many famous songs, including ‘Wouldn't It Be Loverly?’, ‘With a Little Bit of Luck’, ‘The Rain in Spain’, ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’, ‘On the Street Where You Live’ and ‘Get Me to the Church on Time’.

It tells the story of a poor Edwardian flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, who dreams of working in a flower shop rather than selling bunches of violets in the street. By chance, she meets Henry Higgins, a pompous professor of phonetics, who derides her for her strong Cockney accent, and makes a bet that he can teach her to talk like a duchess. Eliza goes along with the idea, as a way of getting the job that she longs for. But both Higgins and Eliza have a lot to learn!

The musical is Lerner and Loewe’s adaptation of the play ‘Pygmalion’ by George Bernard Shaw, and was first performed on Broadway in 1956, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

We are sure it will brighten your winter evening and leave you humming its memorable tunes. We look forward to seeing you there!

Please can anyone help Olveston and Tockington Methodist Church in their search for an occasional pianist?

The Parish Players often use the church's facilities for rehearsals, and we enjoy performing at their Harvest Fayre. It would be great if we could help find them someone to play their piano!

Voluntary Pianist needed.

Our lovely lady who has played for us for many many years wishes to stand down and we are therefore in need of an accompanist for our hymns at our weekly services. The services currently alternate between Tockington and Olveston Methodist Chapels and commence at 10am. There are 4 or 5 hymns and the service lasts one hour.
Services at Tockington are on the 1st and 3rd Sunday and these are the ones we would mainly like to cover or even one service per month would help us immensely.
We have an electric piano.
We would love to hear from you if you can help or can put us in touch with anyone who can.
Please comment below.
Thank you in anticipation.
