We perform a musical production in February each year, rehearsing through the winter months. The Parish Players was formed in Olveston in 1980, by a group led by Jean Webster, as a development from a very active and successful drama group within Olveston and Tockington WI, which can trace its origins to the 1960s. The first production was on 26th February 1981 for three nights with an Olde Tyme Mu
sical Hall. Any profits went to Parish Hall and Meeting Point funds. Tickets cost £1.00 for adults and 50p for children. The programme was 5p. The show had a cast of 18, with four guest artistes. The producer was Jean Webster, choreographer Francine Cavin, pianist Mary Hosey. Jean proceeded to direct a string of popular home-grown musical-comedies with titles which included ‘Happy Days’, ‘Showtime’ and ‘Dancing Queen’ – all staged at the Parish Hall. Jean was supported by a company of players made up of local personalities such as Freddy and Carmen Pitts. After Jean’s death, Penny Bush became director and continued the formula for several years until 1997 when she moved away and the players went into a short hibernation. In 2000, Beryl Keay, a founder member of The Parish Players, wrote a millennium play, which traced the history of the parish since Roman times, and Linda Evans was asked to direct it. This rekindled enthusiasm and resulted in The Parish Players reforming. The Parish Players then continued to present many of the great musicals, including a range of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operas, under Linda’s expert direction, until she stepped down in 2023. The group benefited hugely from Linda's long-running creative partnership with Musical Director Chloe Allsopp-Jones. Heather Collins then took on the role of Director from Linda, again working alongside Chloe. She first directed our very successful production of Brigadoon in 2024. We are fortunate to stage our shows at the Parish Hall, which provides such a warm and intimate atmosphere. Long may it continue. The Early Years
