Spoonie Rave at Trinity Centre last month 💜

A beautiful day of rest, ritual, play, ethereal sounds and sights - with Bean Pig Puppets surrealist puppetry and dreamy sounds from Neogaze, transcendental saxophone from Rebecca Sneddon, Dan Johnson with their gorgeous Zither and mr_hopkinson playing us out with otherworldly ambience. I was literally levitating.

I can’t quite put into words how special it felt to create and be together in this space, I know it meant a lot to others who were there too.

It’s such a relief to collectively keep each other safe, to feel a sense that we’re sharing the same reality. To be seen, understood and cared for.

Mask required events are easier to organise than some folks might think! People are cool with masking up when we do it together, and honestly the vibes are so so good when we care for each other in this way.

Drop me a message if you want some tips on running safer events ⭐️

Big Big Love to Ant Lightfoot for supporting me with the event access and being a huge joy to work with.

Thanks to WECA for supporting the event with the creative freelancer grant and to Trinity Centre for the perfect space.

Thanks so much to everyone who was involved in Spoonie Rave on Sunday - I’m still basking in the warm afterglow 🌞

Thanks to the access and care crew for holding me and us, to the volunteers for helping out with set up, box office and the tea bar, to the artists for gorgeous sounds and sights, to our driver for collecting all the soft things for us to rest on, to the folks who lent us soft things, to Trinity Centre and staff for the perfect space, to the sun and garden, to WECA for partially funding the event with the creative freelancers grant, and to everyone who came along and participated in creating a beautiful, connected, fun, restful, inclusive space.

Thank you to everyone who was able to wear a mask for consistently masking and to the folks who dropped out due to viral illness, for keeping us all safe 💜

If you were at Spoonie Rave, it would be really excellent to hear your feedback, to find out what your experience of the event was like, to further develop it and to help keep it going.

Here’s the feedback form and questions, You can leave a voice note instead if you like: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdYKQcCDN3RdiYYsHThFJycAuDNQ9qUUguRFRmgJp_9JLrEKQ/viewform?usp=sharing

What are FFP2 masks and why are we requiring them at Spoonie Rave?

Love is wearing a mask and we are so glad to be co-creating a space rooted in community care!

Anyone can become disabled, or have a further decline in their health at any time, and COVID is a risk factor for this*

FFP2 masks are an excellent way to reduce this risk, to care for each other, protect our collective health, protect our art scene and create an equitable space that includes people who are currently shut out of public spaces 💜

FFP2 masks are designed to protect against airborne viruses such as COVID, whereas surgical and cloth masks are much less effective.

Masks are most protective when they have a good seal, like a pair of goggles. We need a good mask seal because airborne viruses such as COVID linger in the air like smoke.

Unlike an FFP2 mask, surgical masks are designed to provide barrier protection against droplets and they do not have an air tight seal, so they aren’t as protective against airborne particles such as virus material.

Also, FFP2 masks are not sieves! They have an electrostatic charge that makes particles like viruses and allergens stick to the fibres of the mask like a magnet, and stops you breathing them in. Cloth masks do not have this charge.

59% of COVID infections are spread presymptomatically (before symptoms start) or asymptomatically (with no symptoms), so it’s important to have safety measures in addition to staying home when sick.

If you’re concerned about mask wearing and sensory issues, check out our next post by the amazing .Courn - they speak beautifully on this subject.

*A recent review of 429 studies found that 1/3 of people who get COVID go on to develop Long COVID - find more info on this in the essay ‘What is Long COVID?’ https://www.thegauntlet.news/p/what-is-long-covid

The entrance to the building has step-free access.
There is a lift up to the first floor.
There are 28 steps from the ground floor to the first floor with a railing.

There will be gender-neutral toilets on the first floor.

There will be two spaces at Spoonie Rave:
In the Fyfe hall there will be live performances throughout the day.

Rest
In the Fyfe hall there will be soft things to rest on such as cushions, bean bags and chairs with back support.

This is a relaxed event, you’re welcome to come in and out of performances as you wish, stand, sit, lie down, stim, be still, move and rest in whatever way feels good; you have space to do what feels best for you and your body.

You are welcome to bring a blanket or whatever you need to feel comfy! Stim toys will be available, bring your own if you’d like to.

COVID-19
To keep each other safe, FFP2 (or better) masks are required for all; unless you have a specific barrier to wearing a mask.

You don’t need to disclose your barrier to wearing a mask; however, if you are able to wear a mask, you will be doing so for the benefit of the whole group - including attendees who are unable to wear a mask.

FFP2 masks will be provided for anyone who needs one on arrival. Please bring your own if you can. Here’s some more info on FFP2 masks: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WlIG2ZmUEosQpBcvhJ_cHB8AamVX7VWzZgJxoXdM0ps/edit

Trinity Centre has a beautiful garden if you need a mask break during the event.
