A little deep dive into one of the most challenging shots from our film ‘Orbital’: The Earth Shot.
If you’ve been lucky enough to catch the show in venue at Cosm LA or Dallas, you’ll have seen first hand the result of months of work.
▪️ This shot ended up being one continuous 8.5 minute shot, clocking in at over 30k frames, and rendered at 24K / 60fps
▪️ A whopping 35,000 render hours were needed for this one shot alone
▪️ The horizontal texture resolution of the earth was over 1/2 million pixels
▪️ All cloud and city data was created and assembled from real NASA, satellite and Open Street Maps data
▪️ Alongside the huge earth, we had to include the atmosphere, stars, clouds, thunderstorms and lightning, meteor showers and some epic auroras, alongside the terminator line moving from day to night
▪️ The atmosphere was a volumetric model, modelled on real atmospheric data (not just a shader)
▪️ The route the shot covered over the earth required meticulous planning. This included the speed (therefore distance) at which we could move across the earth without incurring motion sickness, tying up the story points/narration relating to specific activity/locations we had to hit, and enough dense city lights to bring the night sky to life
And if you haven’t managed to catch the show yet, Orbital should be coming to select Cosm planetariums this year globally 🙌
