The Scratch Theatre — One Year of Stories

What began as a small idea in a room above a beautiful old pub has grown into something extraordinary.
A year ago, a few of us decided to take a chance — to see what might happen if we simply did something.

Since that first night, we’ve filled every event with laughter, music, masks, movement, and moments that shifted from the shocking to the beautiful, the beautiful to the hilarious, and the hilarious to the wonderfully absurd.

We’ve brought audiences and actors together — sharing stories that blur the line between stage and seat, between creation and community. Nights filled with energy, song, dance, and theatre in every form imaginable.

An incredible community of people have given their time, energy, and talent to make it happen. Volunteers, actors, writers, directors, sound and light, social media, website builders, stage hands — every single person has played a part in creating something alive and brilliant.

Strangers became friends.
Audiences became supporters.
Feedback became shows.
And the shows brought magic to people’s evenings.

To everyone who has performed, helped, or come to watch — thank you. You’ve helped build something real.

As we look forward to the year ahead, we’re reminded of one simple truth:
if you do something, if you take a chance, people will support it and come.

They’ll act, laugh, and help out.
That’s how creative worlds begin — with one small act of courage and a room full of belief.

How To Survive an Apocalypse
Written and performed by Grania Pickard Directed by Willow Vidal-Hall

Yesterday I sat in rehearsals for How To Survive an Apocalypse, and I watched something rare take shape. What Grania is creating is a story drawn directly from lived experience, but told as a piece of theatre in a joyful, honest, and sometimes painful way. It moves with sharp wit and warmth, and then lands with a clarity that stops you in your tracks.

This solo show builds its world through physical theatre and sharply observed comedy, but beneath that humour is a powerful narrative about surviving.

It is rare in theatre to sit inside something so truthful. This is one of those moments.
Come and witness it.

Last night I was sitting in rehearsals for one of our upcoming shows on the 11th of November, and I watched something extraordinary take shape.

From boxes that unlock themselves to moments of pure, high-energy storytelling, this show instantly pulls you in. Time drops away. You find yourself completely absorbed in the world has created.

At the centre is Billy’un — a character unlike any I’ve seen in years. Innocent, hopeful, funny, deeply committed, and quietly vulnerable. Billy’un’s journey is driven not just by performance, but by the audience. Participation in this piece isn’t a gimmick; it is genuine collaboration. We become co-creators in the story, sharing its risks, its failures, its joy.

This is a show about rediscovering your own power, trusting your heart, and stepping into the life you were meant to live.

The rehearsal room was alive with laughter, tenderness, and that rare spark you only feel when a piece of theatre is doing something truly special. This is a performance people will remember — nuanced, uplifting, and full of heart.

If you can make it on the 11th, come. It’s the kind of performance that stays with you long after you’ve left the room.
Directed by Willow Vidal-Hall
