About the work:
WHO HURT YOU? stages the final performance of an aged musician, hosted by a drag icon, alongside her embittered ensemble, all figures in fading glory.

The piece is a collage of influences, ranging from the 1995 film Showgirls to the later life of boxing legend Jake LaMotta, dragged back onstage in a chaotic off-Broadway show, barely conscious and being made to regurgitate lines that made him a star decades earlier.

Blending hyper-theatre and pop culture with a stark, sculptural approach to dance, BULLYACHE conjures a maximalist vision teetering on the edge of chaos and collapse.

Interwoven with pop songs and haunting ballads, the work explores queerness, class, exploitation, and community, testing the means of survival available within the spectacle of contemporary commercial culture.

Performed by Deyn and Samuel (BULLYACHE), alongside legendary drag pianist Barbs, dancers Sam Dilkes and Frank Yang, and composer-performer Magnus Westwell, the piece is a heady mix of biographical and autobiographical material platforming BULLYACHE's signature blurring of character and self, audience and participant.

Joy, bewilderment, awe and astonishment... watching Edward Watson ( ) perform on our stage last week.

It's incredible to see someone moving with so much history in their body, and with such control and abandon... we felt truly honoured.

ASYLUM is an amazing solo choreographed by _ commissioned by Vildwerk.

Inspired by Lee Krasner’s ‘Night Journeys’ - a series of huge paintings she made following the death of her husband Jackson Po***ck.

Choreography by Antonia Franceschi
Music by Claire van Kampen, Uncaged (2020)
Costume Design by Carmella Lynn Lauer
Original Lighting Design by Kelly Martin
Light Design for Bristol by Chris Heigham

First performed by New York Theatre Ballet on February 13, 2020, at Danspace Project. This work has been made possible by a grant from the O’Donnell-Green Music and Dance Foundation.

"I like this to sum up the whole piece: I'm certain Lee believed in God.... But she wasn't someone who thinks a 'religious' painting is one which has religious imagery. Rather, she was interested in the whole notion of art as a sublime statement -- Man trying to get beyond this world to reach some transcendental reality."
