Every Bristol promoter has a story about the venue that replied your email with proper information.

Before you start chasing anyone, it’s worth knowing how many people a place actually holds and who owns it. A 140-capacity pub back room and a 600-capacity charity-run hall are very different first nights.

The directory puts that in one place: grassroots venues, pubs and bars, the people providing the rig, promoters and flyer printers. Build a contact list as you go and keep track of who’s replied.

A detail you might not know: Exchange in Old Market is one of Bristol’s first community-owned music venue, owned by more than 389 shareholders.

Bristol had a zero-waste shop before most UK cities did. Zero Green opened on North Street in 2018.

That’s one of 65 places on the directory that help you fix, borrow, swap and grow instead of buying new. They include volunteer repair cafés across the city, a library of things, community fridges open to anyone, and housing co-ops. There’s also a hackspace with 24/7 access to laser cutters and 3D printers.

Most of them are run by communities rather than companies, and a lot of them need volunteers more than customers.

Until 1951 this was illegal. Readers in this country were prosecuted under the Witchcraft Act of 1735, then under the Fraudulent Mediums Act that replaced it, which stayed on the books until 2008. Two and a half centuries of working secretly, not advertising, not keeping records, not putting your name on anything.

The law is gone, but the practice goes on. The trade still runs on whispers mainly. You get a name from a friend of a friend, you go to a flat in Easton, you probably don't post about it.

That is fine for privacy, but terrible for anyone trying to make a living at it.
