When history comes full circle… 🎪🐎

I met this lovely man Ed Lawrence the other day at The Beat Goes On Crew planning and party weekend where I'm the Creative Director.

I discovered that he is a descendant of William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody.....and suddenly I started thinking about just how extraordinary the connections are!

I often camp alongside David Sanger , a descendant of the legendary Lord George Sanger, who travels with his beautiful horse-drawn stage. I put my tipi up beside his stage, surrounded by that wonderful old tradition of travelling performance.

My own ancestors have their place in this story too, with Geronimo (one of my ancestors) and my family's connection to Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.

But the history between these two families is fascinating.

Buffalo Bill Cody and Lord George Sanger were rivals in the travelling entertainment world. They even ended up in a legal dispute over Sanger's presentation of the Wild West.
And yet their paths continued to cross.
In 1903, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and Lord George Sanger's show were both performing in Taunton. They were competing shows, but remarkably, both were doing what was described at the time as “capacity business”, meaning both were filling their shows.

Perhaps that makes Taunton even more special to me, because my mum Paula Sudbury and my grandparents have lived there too, Mum still does. So in a strange way, that place has been woven through my family's story across generations.

In 1908, a book about Buffalo Bill's European tours included letters from both Buffalo Bill Cody and Lord George Sanger, bringing their names together again in the written history of travelling entertainment.

And now, more than a century later…

A descendant of Buffalo Bill Cody.

A descendant of Lord George Sanger.

And me, carrying my own family connection to Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and to Geronimo.

Three people. Three family histories. Three threads from the extraordinary world of travelling shows, circus and Wild West performance, crossing paths again generations later.

I really think I need to introduce these two men....

Some love doesn't arrive quietly....

It hits like a supernova 💥
Intoxicating.

All-consuming.

Beautiful enough to make you forget the danger of getting too close.....

There’s something about fire that feels like love to me.

You can adore its heat.

Lose yourself in its glow.

Dance with it.

Feel completely alive in its presence.

But fire is fire.

It has the power to warm you, mesmerise you, light up the darkness…

and burn you!

Maybe that’s what makes passion so intoxicating.

That edge.

That surrender.

That feeling of standing close enough to something powerful to feel its heat against your skin.

Some things don't need to be safe to be beautiful.

They just need to be understood.

✨ Something is brewing… ✨

There’s been a lot happening behind the scenes lately, and I think I’m finally ready to let you in on a tiny little secret…

I’m in the process of setting up a Community Interest Company. 🌱🔥✨

I’m not telling you the name yet. 😉
I’m not telling you everything it’s going to encompass yet either…

Because I want to get this right.

I’ve been pulling together all the pieces, writing things down, shaping the ideas and trying to turn a whole load of dreams, experiences and slightly bonkers creative adventures into something that can actually grow into something much bigger.

The paperwork is now at the stage where I’m getting it professionally looked over and assessed before I take the plunge, pay the registration fee and send off the application.

So right now…

I’m waiting.

Crossing my fingers.

And probably overthinking everything. 😂

But if the feedback is good and everything is as it should be, the next step will be officially registering it. 🥳

And then I can finally tell you what I’ve been cooking up.

For now, though…

🤫 The name stays secret.

Let’s just say it involves creativity, community, culture, connection, imagination and a whole lot of heart.

And knowing me…

Probably a little bit of magic too. ✨

💔 Existance Festival 2026 has been cancelled.
I’ve seen understandable anger and disappointment about the timing, especially from people who have booked travel, accommodation, taken time off and been looking forward to the festival.
And I completely understand that.
But I also wanted to share a perspective from someone who sits on both sides of the fence.
I’ve been involved in festivals for many years as a performer, creative director and organiser. I’m also a member of both Equity and the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF).
So I know what it’s like to be the performer waiting for a festival to happen, but I also know what goes on behind the scenes trying to make one happen.
The independent festival industry is struggling.
AIF reported 78 UK festivals announced a postponement, cancellation or closure in 2024, with another 39 festivals lost by June 2025.
Festivals aren't just weekends of music.
They support performers, musicians, traders, technicians, suppliers, caterers, artists, builders and entire communities.
Behind the magic is licensing, insurance, fire safety, infrastructure, risk assessments, suppliers, finances and hundreds of moving parts. Sometimes, despite fighting to the very last minute, things simply become impossible.
So yes, be disappointed. Ask questions. Be frustrated.
But perhaps also have some compassion for the people behind the festival who have been trying to make the impossible possible.
Independent festivals are disappearing. And if we want them to survive, we need to start asking why.
This is the statement I received today from the Magical Mystery Tent 🎪, which I was travelling with to Existance Festival.

🖤🐍 YOU CAN’T DRINK OIL....

At the Horse-Drawn Festival, I performed a burlesque piece on top of the rocket car. Instead of water pouring over me, it was oil. Then I offered the audience a drink.

“Would you like a drink?”

Obviously, you can't drink oil. That was the point.
Coming from the reservation, this carries a much deeper meaning. The Black Snake has become a symbol of pipelines threatening Indigenous land and water.

We saw it at Standing Rock, where people travelled from around the world to stand alongside Indigenous communities protecting the water. People prayed peacefully, yet were met with water cannons, shields and force.

And this isn't just happening in America. We are still fighting fossil fuel development here while our climate gets hotter and extreme weather becomes increasingly frightening.

Indigenous teachings remind us to think about seven generations ahead.

So what world are we leaving them?

Clean water?

Fresh air?

Healthy soil?

Food they can grow?

Or more oil?

You can't drink oil.
Water is life. 💧🐍

Fun memories of Sunnyhill last year with Ron Tree, just spent the weekend together on stage at 3wishes with Sacred Geometry Banned. I got some of his art for mum as she attended one of his gigs when he was in Hawkwind many years ago. Fun fact, Alisons (who's built and driving Squishtech ) father was in Nic Turners AllStars too!
