✨ FLOATY FISH ✨
Getting back into painting again now I’m feeling well enough to sit. These lil’ guys are a warmup before I tackle some long outstanding commissions. Hope everyone’s having a fab day!

Also - I changed my instagram handle. Same content as before (lauren.at.larkspur) just my actual name 🙂

✨Happy New Year✨
2021 has been brilliant. The start of the and a year of learning and exploration. Connecting with new friends who joined the challenge with me and made it that bit more special. The support from the little community that’s built up around it has been amazing and it’s been so heartwarming to see others make connections through it too.

Though I set out to complete 80 animal works this year, sadly I’ve only managed to complete 35. That’s not including 6 that are still in progress and 2 commissions I’ve not shared at all… but I have achieved my other goals - to experiment and learn, to create my own style of painting (this is a huge one for me), and to create a body of work larger than anything else I’ve ever created before!

It’s been really hard trying to fit time in around my full time work and general life but I’m proud of what’s been created. I’m also proud of and grateful to everyone who took part and followed along with us in the challenge. ✊🏻💥

I’ve been totally hampered by illness since the start of October however, and too unwell to paint, so sorry for the radio silence. I needed to take time to help myself heal away from instagram, but things are looking up for 2022! 🤞🏻😅

If you made it this far, thank you! I have a small service announcement:

⭕️ I’M CHANGING MY INSTA HANDLE ⭕️
I’ve made the decision to close my LarkspurGallery Etsy store so my current tag ‘lauren.at.larkspur’ is no longer relevant. I’ll be changing it at some point in the next few weeks hopefully to something involving my name and ‘art’ or ‘artist’. Content will not be changing. Please DM for sales enquiries until my new website goes live😁

Thank you all & HAPPY NEW YEAR!💛

💩THE REJECTS💩

These are the pieces I entered into the open exhibition and represent what I feel are my strongest works from 2021 so far. All were rejected. It’s not the first time this has happened and it won’t be the last. And that’s ok. Competition for this type of exhibition is huge and it makes me want to improve and get better even more! Though it would be great if they would tell you why? If anyone in the know can offer any advice or insight please message me 😄

In the mean time congratulations to those people who did have work accepted! I’m really looking forward to attending the show in October to take in your awesome work 🙌🏻

✨ON THE EDGE✨
After spending a whole month on this piece, I finally feel comfortable enough to post it. Scroll for detail and whole piece shots.

Sumatran Tigers are critically endangered and it is believed there less than 400 individuals left in the wild. The main reasons behind this are deforestation and poaching. Humans are s**t. More information and tiger adoption, which helps conservation efforts, can be found on the WWF website - worldwildlife.org

This is 29 in my - if you saw in my stories last month, this is the piece that started life as a palette knife painting using watercolour! I told you I wasn’t crazy! 🤪

Instagram’s change in what it promotes (video) has left me feeling a tonne of pressure to video everything I do, and ultimately this has made me not want to paint. There’s now a whole load of annoying video set up to get through before I can actually pick up a brush!! That being said, i’ve recorded every stage of the process for this, so I’m hoping to create a reel and a full video of that over the next week.

Thanks for being patient with me 💛

⚡️INDIGO⚡️
Did you know I use indigo in all my paintings and, in fact, always use a limited palette of 1-3 colours for all my work! Here i’ve spent a bit of time repainting the raven in my sketch book from earlier in my as a gift for a friend. Anyone else tried repainting something accurately? It’s flippin’ impossible 😅

I chose a different bright blue to use from the original and the paper was different so the bleeds worked out differently but he’s been fun! This is number 25! Only 55 left to go... 😂👌🏻

⚡️✨FINISHED!✨⚡️
Suggestions for a title below please 👇🏻 Scroll for detail & full page shots plus video!

The falcon herself has taken over 16 hours across 4 painting sessions and I’m exhausted but relieved she’s finally done! Those feet were a real challenge!! Few! 😌 Have a lovely Sunday evening everyone.

Don’t forget to leave your title suggestions below. Atm i’m thinking along the lines of ‘On the Hunt’ or ‘Scout’ / ‘Lookout’

Number 24 in my another massive 36x51cm painting!

✨WIP VIDEO ✨
Here’s a time lapse of my white variation Gyrfalcon and the 1st WIP post of my

This is probably about 8-9 hours of painting across two painting sessions, and there’s probably another 16 to go until this piece is done. Still some tonal work to do under the head and LOADS to do on the feet. Really loving this piece though. There’s a saying; ‘Tone does all the work, colour gets all the glory’. This piece definitely demonstrates tone CAN have the glory too! 🙌🏻🤍🖤

Thanks to all who took a guess at what it was in my stories too! It was super hard. Only 4 people guessed correctly! Hoping to have this finished later this week 😁

Happy Bank Holiday Monday everyone! 😄💛

It’s week 3 of The challenge by and it’s been a joy! 🙌🏻✨ scroll for a scale shot, closeups and the reference image! It’s MASSIVE - deffo my biggest painting to date. I’m not sure what to call Mr Puffin yet though, so comment below with any ideas!

🌊🦜I’ve always wanted to paint a sea parrot so this was my chance to go all in 😄 This is number 23 in my own . Thanks again to for another awesome reference image!

Have a brilliant day everyone, and an amazing weekend! 🙌🏻💛

✨THE WETLANDS✨
Week 2 of ‘s was a lapwing. Not a type of photo reference I usually go for, it was fully side on and static. I usually look for an interesting pose or a sense of movement in the animals I paint. Though a great image highlighting the bird’s amazing plumage, it would be something akin to what you’d find in a bird identifying guide book, so this one was a massive struggle to set in an environment. This is number 22 in my own and I really missed my bright colours doing this one. I’m going to have to make up for it during my next piece! Scroll across to see the full thing and detail shots as it’s very landscape.

Happy FriYAY! Have a truly wonderful day everyone, and an amazing weekend! 🙌🏻💛
