Based in Bristol, Circomedia is a world-renowned centre for contemporary circus and physical theatre. Circomedia was founded by physical theatre expert, Bim Mason and choreographer and performer Helen Crocker. It rose out of the ashes of Fooltime, Britain’s first ever circus school – and ever since has attracted students from all over the world. Our Academy combines traditional circus skills with
physical theatre and creativity. This approach to education has led to Circomedia being acknowledged as a centre of excellence worldwide. Alongside our Academy and recreational classes, we curate an innovative performance programme from our venue in the heart of Bristol. In the grand Georgian surroundings of St Paul’s Church, you can discover some of the most exciting circus, physical theatre, and dance companies from the UK and beyond. Artistic policy
Circomedia is committed to the principles of performer as creator and the integration of circus disciplines with theatre in its widest sense. If performers in circus and theatre are to be able to contribute to the creative process and be more than the vehicle of a director's vision, we believe the development of the individual's creative and performance skills to be of equal importance to those of technical expertise. Educational philosophy
For over thirty years, Circomedia has led the way in contemporary circus training. We believe creativity and individuality matter just as much as physical skill. Our teaching prepares students for today’s artistic landscape and gives them the tools to shape the circus of tomorrow. You can join Circomedia Academy from age 16 on our BTEC course and progress all the way to a degree in Circus and Physical Theatre. We also offer flexible Diplomas, from 3 to 36 months, so people can keep specialising even after you graduate.
