Looking closely. Sketching. Returning to the studio.

For Elaine Jones, time spent among trees is an essential part of her process. These new paintings grow from that practice of close observation, capturing something of the strength, delicacy and quiet presence of the natural world. 🌳

Not every sketch has to be a finished idea.

At Bristol Harbourside, Andrew Hood Artist captures the boats and bustle of the waterfront. It may not be the prettiest drawing, but that’s not really the point. Back in the studio, Andrew can look again with fresh eyes and perhaps find a shape, composition or detail that sparks the beginning of a painting. ⚓

On the busy Whiteladies Road, Andrew Hood Artist finds a moment to sketch.

Working wet-on-wet allows the pigment to move more freely, creating unexpected marks and textures that bring energy to the drawing. By allowing an element of chance into the process, Andrew finds that some of the most interesting details are the ones he couldn’t have planned. ✏️

“This small study captures Rosudgeon – a quiet Cornish hamlet near Prussia Cove. It stems from an early evening walk across the fields, trying to catch the low light as the sun begins to set” – Anna Boss.

Big blocks of graphite and colour form the base of this dynamic sketch of The Mall. Part of a new series of sketches around the city, some of these Bristol studies will be worked up into paintings ahead of Andrew Hood Artist’s upcoming exhibition at Clifton Contemporary Art. ✏️
